Date: 11/1/05 03:27 pm (UTC)I adore that fic. In fact, I've got a half-concocted LJ entry in my head about how I think that is one of the most completely realized examples of slash fanfic liek evah. I barely remembered the movie, but after reading your stoyr, I went back and rewatched it. It wasn't the canon that hooked me, but your fanfic! Woot.

After "Four and a Half Minutes," Harry and Ron part company for most of the summer, and have the most awkward exchange of correspondence that can be imagined, and then Harry goes to the Burrow at the end of summer as always, and there's lots of blushing and sudden awkward silences, and also lots of lovely necking.
Then they go back to school and have some sort of horrible misunderstand due to the fact that neither of them is what you'd call a great communicator, so that they're still on the outs when an early skirmish in the great war with Voldemort comes, and Voldemort exploits this in subtle ways, sowing mistrust as best he can. But trust ultimately triumphs, and their alliance ends up being critical to defeating Voldemort, because he wasn't expecting it.

Date: 11/1/05 10:41 pm (UTC)I think Vecchio had a moment of discovery during "Left," even though Kowalski didn't. In my happier moments, I can see this leading to a good-but-difficult grown-up relationship of the sort Hth (http://gatefiction.com/hth/inthistogether.htm) writes.
In my sadder moments, I see a tentative relationship just getting established and then getting blown out of the water because Fraser comes home. I've never really known how to resolve the threesome there; there's so much love and so much utter dysfunctionality on all sides ...

Date: 11/1/05 07:47 pm (UTC)I'm answering yours first because I already have notes for it.
Fin goes home with Chrt. It's hard for him to do his job, because they don't have enough experience with pollution or energy shortages to make them really value domestic-environment engineering, so it's a struggle for him.
They all work together to build this enormous homestead, with room for 14 adults and all the litters they'll have -- more like a small town than a house. Nobody wants to sleep in the same room with Fin, and Fin hates sleeping alone.
A pregnancy among Chrt's people takes two years -- the first one in the female and the second one in the male. Some other couple has the first pregnancy; Chrt and a female named Trss have the second one. During the first year, the main action going is the mutual hostility between Fin and Trss, but eventually Fin figures out that Trss is xenofreaking -- nobody else has been able to figure that out -- and he figures out some way to help her out. At the end of the year, when it's time for the pups to be transferred to Chrt, she asks Fin to be present, to be part of the mating, and there's a three-way bond formed.
One of the previable pups dies. Chrt is mostly mad because it gives the busybodies an excuse to curtail his movements; his people are very pragmatic about these things, and they say, "It wasn't really alive yet anyway," but it looks almost like an infant, and Fin cries and cries. (On Earth, a miscarriage means the end of your one and only chance to reproduce; it's one of the culture's greatest tragedies.)
Then the first litter of pups are born. (They spend so long in the pouch that at birth they're on the developmental level with toddlers.) Fin freaks out a little at first -- multiple offspring are so taboo -- but while they're still little, they like to sleep in a big pile, and they'll let him sleep with them, and so he's finally comfortable. Little piping voices going, "Pfin! Pfin!"
They're native speakers of the pidgin (so they can communicate with Fin), and since they use it as a language, they begin to change it.
There's no resolution in my notes, so I'm not sure what happens next.

Date: 11/1/05 11:08 pm (UTC)And the other short answer is that Display (http://trickster.org/res/display.html) happens right after "The Teeth of the Hydra."
As in Display, I think Vecchio comes back and then Fraser and Ray can go join Jessica's Pink Patrol, buy a house together, and be all Out. Ray probably gets together with Frank and Bev Constantine, which is probably a lot more fun for Frank than it is for Bev, and I suspect that Frank doesn't quite know what to make of Fraser.
They stay with the Pink Patrol for about as long as they can realistically be street-duty cops, and when the force starts making noises about promoting one or both of them to a desk job, they decide, instead, to go teach other towns how to put together anti-hate-crimes squads.

Date: 11/1/05 05:04 pm (UTC)When you said this, I had an immediate flashback to the daydreams I had for weeks about Advantage and John and those khama nuts; in my daydreams, eating the nuts always reactives the slave enzyme. Wouldn't it be incredibly tempting to have a way to overcome your physical limits? (I've always wanted to be able to do the splits, for one thing.) And of course John has this convenient and incredibly inconvenient way to gain new skills (learn karate in a day! surrender your whole being for a day!) Which led, in my mind, to a whole lot of pretty angst and even prettier John-Sheppard-flexibility. Mmmr.

Date: 11/1/05 11:18 pm (UTC)But John has a stash, and he opens the drawer and looks at them, and at first he's just thinking, Wouldn't it be great to eat one and have Rodney order me to [shoot better or run faster or be able to sense the Wraith coming or be able to do whatever the current Crisis of the Week demands].
But more and more they're just guilty sex fantasies, and then he closes the drawer and goes and tries to prod Rodney into ordering him around, which you'd think Rodney would have a natural aptitude for, but due to Recent Events he feels all guilty and conflicted about it and it tends to either prevent the sex from starting or halt it suddenly in the middle.
Rodney's sort of guilty and conflicted in general. It makes the relationship difficult at times.
And then one day Rodney catches John looking at his stash of nuts, and John, being John, just clams up and refuses to talk. And Rodney says, "Wait, you liked that? That's a good memory for you?"
And then they have hot sex, with Rodney all verbal and demanding and John wildly eager to do anything he says, do anything before he even has a chance to say it. And it's only afterwards that they realize that John never even ate any of the nuts.
(Actually the style won't work for me in that way, either, but I don't know how to fix it.)

Date: 11/1/05 11:32 pm (UTC)Another possible answer is in my conversation with
Another possibility, of course, given that Pegasus is Pegasus, is that they end up in a place where their survival depends on their being able to fake that Rodney is John's slave. And at first Rodney is secretly kind of relieved, because now he gets to pay John back and then they'll be even, but the thing is that John is really terrible at it! He just can't fake it at all!
So Rodney notices, of course, and it makes his guilt even worse, because he's thinking, God, does he have that much unspoken resentment towards me? Was it that awful, being my slave, that he can't even act the part now for fear of how he'll act?
And they end up in this situation where Rodney's about to be turned over to the village discipline board to be flogged or something, because he's unsubordinate and John does nothing to correct him. And finally John steps up and says, "No, I'll do it, if I have to."
And now Rodney's actually kind of scared, and when they're taken to some sort of solitary discipline chamber ("Dungeon," Rodney says, and John says, "Shut up"), Rodney starts just spilling at the mouth the way he does: "Oh, god, you've got so much pent-up anger at me that you can't even fake a little spanking or something for fear you'll go all Hulk on me, and now you've got to punish me and you're going to beat me to a pulp because you can't stop yourself!"
And John says, "Anger? What anger?" And Rodney says, "Because you were my slave and I ordered you to get hard five times in one night just because I wanted more!" And John says, very gently like he's talking to an idiot, "Rodney, I liked that."
And then he very slowly and carefully sucks a line of hickies around Rodney's neck and both wrists and both ankles, nice and even to look like rope burn.

Date: 11/1/05 11:47 pm (UTC)I can see Ray having the problems you mention (and Fraser being all, "It's perfectly natural, Ray. Even in the animal kingdom ..."). But I can also see Ray going too far in the opposite direction -- like, if I'm gay, I'm gay, boys and girls -- like he wants to hang out in gay bars and put a rainbow sticker on his car and all, and Fraser's embarrassed because he wants something private, something that's just between the two of them.

Date: 11/2/05 02:45 am (UTC)Like I had in mind one story where Ron comes home exhausted after doing transcontinental Apparition from some match or other, and crawls into bed, and when the sun comes up he begins to have drowsy sleepy sex with someone, and is halfway through before he really knows whether it's Harry or Hermione, because it doesn't really matter all that much ...
Or the one (which I'm sure I've mentioned before) where you've got Harry and Ron trying anal sex for the first time and Hermione, wearing her uniform skirt and nothing else, kneeling beside them on the bed reading instructions to them out of a book ...
Or the one where the boys are both too rough with Hermione, and she keeps saying, "Ow! Not so hard!" the way you do, until finally she makes some Polyjuice and they're all Hermione for the night ...

Date: 11/1/05 08:17 pm (UTC)Then later I figure John pushes him up against a wall near the restroom and shoves a knee between Brian's thighs and kisses him until they're both crazy. And then they drive back to John's place and have amazing tipsy sex and feel, simultaneously, resolved to avoid all family for the next ten thousand years, and kind of liberated for having actually gone through with the wedding. The End.

Date: 11/2/05 03:10 am (UTC)Here's what I think will happen.
Draco, of course, will be Headmaster within five years. (Summs will retire and do something wild, though I'm not sure what.) Harry will stick around wherever Draco is, of course; I think he's got the potential to be an excellent teacher, I think.
Ron and Hermione will stick around for a couple of years, but then Ron will get the chance to travel again (see above (http://www.livejournal.com/users/resonant8/104077.html?thread=2102157#t2102157)), and Hermione will go with him.
Oliver and Penelope are headed for romance, as are Remus and Michelle, of course. I will be very surprised if Sofia and Charlie don't spawn within a couple of years.
I think Kat Bonifay will come out to visit at some point. I can actually see her having a whirlwind romance with Ginny Weasley; at the very least, they'd be pretty and dangerous together.
Sunday Coneskey has a journey in front of him; he's going to walk the Trail of Tears and meet his Western Band counterpart in Oklahoma, uniting the two parts of the Cherokee Nation in preparation for ... um, that's as far as I got, actually.
Lark Brown's ghost is going to begin appearing on the grounds, protecting the younger children from anything that threatens them. She may be like the Thestrels -- it's a bittersweet day when you get too old to see Lark.

Date: 11/2/05 02:14 am (UTC)I think in general what I love about your stories is that they all end so *clearly*. Things aren't always clean and perfect, but you can see them getting there, and so usually, I'm not left with a lot of unanswered questions. Or if I am, they've been answered up above.

Date: 11/2/05 04:12 am (UTC)I'm a big marshmallow, really. When I read other people's stories and they leave the guys in a not-so-happy place? I write happy endings in my head. "Transfigurations" started out that way, actually, but it, uh, sort of grew.
So. Warning.
I'm thinking that that smooth confident dominant Rodney was to a certain extent dependent on a certain idea of what the relationship was here, as in the "so, yes, I'll play" -- now that he's aware that they're not playing, I think that he'll be a little more tentative for a while.
But John is either totally oblivious to any uncertainty on Rodney's part and thinking all along that he and Rodney are on the same page, or else he figures the easiest way to get what he wants is to pretend that's the case (hell, even when he's my POV character, he doesn't tell me very much about what's in his head), so he's going to go on blithely acting as though they have this kind of relationship where Rodney's a sex god and knows it.
So they're going to get out of their locked room and back to John's room (because Rodney will be more nervous there, and naturally the second part needs Rodney POV and Rodney nervousness), and John's puttering about, offering Rodney water, taking off his watch, whatever, while Rodney gets fidgety.
And John's wearing a shirt that Rodney's been thinking about getting his hands on, something unusually soft, with buttons down the front, and he goes to unbutton it, and Rodney without thinking says, "Wait," and John closes his eyes and takes a big deep breath through his nose, like he's wildly turned on just from that.
And Rodney thinks, OK, I can so do this, and he says, nice and low, "Open your eyes."
Well if you don't entirely despise me....

I am totally one of the people who had maybe hoped to see more of Sunday at some point. He was such a cool character, and I sort of felt like maybe Harry had been a bit of a dick the way he left, and maybe owed him some kind of a friendlier treatment... Plus, it would have been awesome to see Draco be insecure about being not tall or 'built' enough ;)
