Saw a preview for "Gifted." I hope I can rely on fandom to give me the romance between Chris Evans' character and Octavia Spencer's character which Hollywood will certainly deny me.

Well, I saw Hansel and Gretel; Jeremy and Gemma are very, very pretty, and it was kind of cartoonishly fun once I managed to get my cultural-criticism lobe cranked down to a quiet whimper.

As far as fandom goes, I can't generate any enthusiasm for any imaginable slash pairing, but I wouldn't mind reading Gretel with Edward. It would undercut the "unattractive or disabled = evil" message that clung like slime to every minute of the film.

I really don't think I'm the kind of slasher who hates canonical female love interests. I had a lovely daydream involving John Sheppard kissing Teyla. I've written Ron/Hermione. And Ray K/Stella, for crying out loud. I thought Steve Rogers and Agent Carter in "Captain America" were adorable.

But I watched the two "Iron Man" movies this week (not for any particular reason [shifty look]), and -- look, am I the only one who can't stand Pepper Potts?

I mean, maybe she was better in the comics? Maybe it's just the way the scriptwriters wrote her that I don't like? Or the way Gwyneth Paltrow performed her?

Cut not so much for spoilers as for Res's spoiled whining )

or, Res sees so few movies that she feels compelled to discuss each and every one of them.

- Look! America still thinks it's the brave little underdog, even while it acts like the sand-kicking bully! That's so adorable. It's like how rich and powerful Christians go on identifying with the Israelites while they go on acting like the Roman Empire.

- Mysteriously and in clear violation of the laws of nature, Tommy Lee Jones is not getting any less sexy. I'd like an explanation of this.

- Oh hai, comic book homoeroticism. You always make things more fun.

Spoilers, though I can't imagine much will surprise you if you've ever, like, seen a movie )
