Here's a thing I discovered by accident today:

Overhead shot of three people working in a victory garden built in a bomb crater

In England during World War II, there are multiple recorded instances of people building victory gardens in bomb craters.

I told the spouse about this, and he said, "That's so English."

"Here we have a hole deeper than I am tall, made by someone who was trying to kill us. Instead of looking on it with fear and despair, suppose we fill it up with soil and use it to grow vegetables? Maybe digitalis, too, since drugs are in short supply? And all around the outer rim, let's plant flowers."

I mean, it's a huge fuck you to the enemy, for sure, a middle finger that can be seen from a bomber plane. But it's also carrots and beans and cabbages.
