I am so very glad that this Bender worked for you. I wrote the line, "The name of the game was he had to win," and I felt like I'd found the Key To Bender, the thing that would make him remain himself even if I mellowed him out enough to keep him alive and out of jail, and even if I made him do stuff like, oh, work for a living and have sex with guys -- but I couldn't be certain that would work for people other than me.
