December Daily: due South fanworks (not fics)

Christmas was postponed at our house because the roads were too bad to go over the river and through the woods to spend the holiday with the spouse. I would probably have been OK with snow, but I couldn't handle the Blizzard Warning (high winds + low temps = perpetual snowdrifts, like imagine a lone hyundai trying to drive through some kind of demonic snow globe).

Actually it's kind of nice. The kidlet had bought a bunch of decorations which there was now time to put up, and we've got extra giftwrap time and some additional unrushed baking projects planned, and yesterday we watched a Muppet Christmas Carol yet again.

Unfortunately I can't answer this at all! When I was in the fandom I don't remember a lot of art, and I was a latecomer to podfic, and my slow internet made vids impossible for me. Because due South isn't an AO3-native fandom, even those non-fic works that made it into AO3 are often eccentrically tagged.

I can point you at my related works page so you can see all the lovely translations and podfics others have done of anything I ever wrote.

But otherwise all I can do is be open to recs from commenters. Anyone?

Oh, your response is made of win! I did not even know about this "my related works page" Being A Thing! I am deffo going to enjoy going through these fanworks that are related to yours (plus the "relateds" might even point me to some fic of yours that I haven't read yet).

Sliding out of lurker status to say, I did manage to find one my my favourite vids from back in the day, still online! Icebound Stream by sisabet, based around "Victoria's Secret." I was trying to figure out why I didn't have more saved, but I think I do--they're just on VHS tape.

I just remembered another one: Zebra by astolat, a nice portrait of Ray Kowalski.

Continuing the theme of "really good dS vids only on VHS," the Media Cannibals had a great RayK vid to "The Rest Will Take Care of Itself" that I am pretty sure has never been remastered or made it to the internet, and I still have the VHS (but not a working VCR) so I have not seen it in years. It was so good, though.

I'll bet there are fannish archivists out there so frustrated at the idea of all the VHS tapes full of content they can't get at.

The AO3 non-native thing has been really noticeable to me because I've been on a dS kick for a while, and all the techniques that I normally use when I get obsessed with a fandom don't work with this one! You can't just go to AO3 and sort by date, say, because some authors put their stories in all at once after the fact, and some stories got brought in when AO3 rescued single-fandom archives. Sorting by kudos or comments or bookmarks is iffy because all of those vary so much by longevity. Things that I remember vividly turn out only to have existed on Livejournal, or on some writer's personal page, or even just in an email from a mailing list. It's like the lost library of Atlantis (the mythical island, not the Stargate series).

howdy hoo, yes, 'tis I, the gentleman piratess! *glomps* (Mainly in order to use the verb 'glomps', and in fact, the whole third person singular construction that is so next-to-last decade). Hey, did you ever publish your alien college story?? I loved that story.

I have ringbinders upon ringbinders of lotrips, SGA, HP and inception fic. It's madness. But I know that some stories are only available as print-outs in those ringbinders, e.g. stories by Quisling who stomped out of fandom in a huff and deleted everything and was never to be heard of again (was that even her name? no: Quiseyes! she wrote Craig Parker which nobody else wrote).

The old archiving and chronology mindset seems to have vanished with the years. Tumblr was the first platform I remember that confounded any sense of linearity or memory. At least, AO3 is an actual archive. Everything that is there just stays put (unless deleted); it doesn't scroll past or randomly pop up. And at least there are time stamps. I do feel sad for older fic, though. They are orphaned. They might have got loads of comments and feedback and spawned discussion but now they sit there with four kudos. Also: kinkfic. Impossible to import.

I have resorted to sorting by bookmarks and then revolted against myself and sought out those least loved. Reccing has become harder. I like Gav's newsletter (do you subscribe?) with recs but often they're in fandoms that I'm not interested in. I used to have my trusted circle of friends whose recs I read. I also now don't know where to rec others' stories. Sometimes I want to shout about a fab fic -- but to whom?

I've been glomped but I have not glomped. Though I've typed my share of /me hugs you and lifts you off your feet sort of thing.

I subscribe to The Rec Center -- is that Gav? I always enjoy reading the newsletter itself, but like you I usually don't so much care about the fandoms.

Guess people rec on tumblr now? I had a tumblr for a while. I deleted it in righteous fury when the purity purge came, but I went on reading specific individual tumblrs, just without the convenience of subscriptions.
