Weekend update

I'm horribly late at announcing these, but:

- Cybel Harper has done a podbook of [livejournal.com profile] kinseyx's podfic of my Harry/Snape story, The Familiar, with cover art by [livejournal.com profile] barbana.

- [livejournal.com profile] luzula has done a podfic of my Due South story, American Way.

for those who've been wondering:

About the cat: He's much better -- stitches out, wounds healed, mostly not showing any sign of pain. He can't jump, and he still gets up kind of stiffly. And his fur still hasn't grown back in much, so his back end still looks disturbingly like something you'd find in the poultry case. But we have high hopes for a reasonably good recovery.

About the school fire: You continue to amaze me. I'm guessing I've probably taken more than a thousand books to the school (with at least two hundred more on the living room floor waiting for the spouse to help me carry the boxes out to the car), and I don't even know how many gift certificates have been sent directly to the kidlet's teacher. I can't believe everyone's generosity. (I knew I was talking to readers, but I forgot I was also talking to teachers, librarians, and parents!)

The principal tells me that they'll be able to salvage some items from the unaffected central part of the school, but only ones that are entirely non-porous -- in other words, none of their books will ever be usable. So they're thrilled to have your contributions.

About the smutlets: Working on them at my usual glacial pace. I will do them all, I promise. You all deserve much more than mere smut, but smut is what I have to give, pa-rum-pa-pum-pum.

About the job: Yes, they did offer it to me as a permanent position. Having a new job is like having the flu: first there's a week where seriously it takes all your energy so you can't do anything else but sleep, and then there's a week where you're just tired all the time, and after that you're OK.

Some days I'm a print shop, and some days I'm a graphic design firm, and some days I'm a concierge, and some days I'm a babysitter. Changing out the ink color in the Risograph involves really dangerous-looking machinery and makes me feel like I'm defusing a bomb. The new postage meter looks like if you looked at it closely enough you'd find the little tiny window through which you could see a little tiny Captain Picard. I've grown to dread the sight of the mad Scotswoman marching up to me holding a bulletin or a newsletter or whatever piece of paper I most recently produced, plus she's about to kill the office poinsettia with her fussing. The organist broke his wrist this week, just in time not to play for the Service of Lessons and Carols; they tell me that this morning when he came out of surgery, he asked for a Vicodin and a martini.

I'll start introducing the rest of the cast of characters with Pastor Fixit. Once preached a sermon based on thoughts she'd had while installing a toilet. Buys her husband jewelry and asks him to buy her power tools. Looked at my lunch and said, "I haven't seen an obento since I lived in Japan." Can juggle and do around-the-world with a yoyo. Intelligent, imaginative, liberal, outspoken. Um, yes, I can't help it; I have a type.

About what I want to do when I grow up: Well, it's not being a church secretary, though that works out fine as a stopgap and can probably provide me some credentials in the skills I most want to use more of. Once I have more energy, I'll start doing research again, so those of you who helped me out weren't completely wasting your time.

And what's new in your worlds?

I missed so much of your happenings while I was away - just read back about the cat in the pink pants (that needed a photo), but I'm glad he's recovering.

Also, rebuilding a library on the power of smut is fabulous!

He now looks like he's wearing gray felt pants, which I suppose is an improvement over pink leather ones, but cats' dignity is apparently all in their fur.

I can't remember if I told you already, but I just forwarded your info on to the sister of a friend, who's been an elementary teacher at a private school near Cleveland for almost 30 years and has built up a collection too big for her school to store.

The Distant Future of Fandom gave the info to her school Principal, but they haven't decided how they're going to coordinate it yet. Unfortunately, the economic collapse means there are a *lot* of good causes going begging right now. But I'm so proud of fandom for helping yours!

How nice of you, both times! And tell the DFoF thanks. It's really true that there are more needs than resources; I suppose the school is lucky in that what it really needs are used books, which there's an ample supply of.

You job sounds like I'd like to watch it on TV. Or, you should be writing for TV. Either way... fantastic news about the cat *and* amazingly giving people. :-)

There's usually not quite this much collating on TV, but there are certainly interesting people. On Thursday a guy came by to ask for bus money, and I could hear him downstairs asking to talk to "the padre," and when he met Pastor Fixit, he called her "Madre"!

I want to marry Pastor Fixit! :-)
Except they just went and outlawed that in my state. :-(

I know; it's very sad. On the other hand, she is already married, so.

School is over for me, unfortunately the job world is not being too obliging with work just yet.

[identity profile] resonant8.livejournal.com 2008-12-21 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry to hear that. It's a really horrible time to be looking for a job, isn't it?

[identity profile] tofty.livejournal.com 2008-12-14 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I am in love with your pastor as well.

A neighbor said, "Oh, is that the church that was doing the Celtic services this summer? I think that's the one my dad was going to because he said the pastor was hot."

And when I repeated this story to her, she knew who the guy was we were talking about. I hope it wasn't because he drooled or something.
