I dreamed the dwarves from the Lord of the Rings movies met up with a team of mining dwarves who were working with a small, young dragon. They couldn't really communicate with him except on the level you could with a pet - like a noise that means "I need help," one that means "I want something," one that means "you're my buddy, yes you are." But Thorin had an immediate telepathic connection with him. And this dragon was ASTONISHED to learn that dwarves were sapient and it was possible to communicate with them.

It would be a disturbing thing to happen. Like the dragon thinks, "I've been thinking of this one as Schnoogles and I know he likes it when I rest my head on his shoulder, and now I learn that his name is Gurin Gurr's Son and he has deep thoughts about how crystal formation might be affected by temperature."

This is a GREAT story idea. It would take very little work to file off the serial numbers and make it a profic, too, if you're thinking that way.

I suspect our cats are like that, assuming their humans are barely sapient because we just don't GET IT when a cat is communicating perfectly clearly that it's dinnertime so hurry that food up willya! But they tolerate us because we're cosy to sit on, and they figure we mostly mean well even if we're dumb as a box of rocks and can't purr.

Why is this so oddly charming!? Considering what the dragons are like in canon, it should be disturbing, but I just keep picturing the little dragon in a harness pulling mine carts because wow, it turns out that these creatures actually have complex thought which includes generations of experience about how/where to find the BEST gold, and they are willing to let you sleep on it if you help them dig it up!

Dragon: Okay, they can talk and they can FIND GOLD from up to half a mile away!!1! This is worth getting over the horror for.
