Tonight at dinner the spouse and I were coming up with community theater mashups. (Well, first I had to define 'mashup' for the spouse, who typically listens to nothing but Beethoven and the Beatles.)

"Children of a Lesser Godspell."
"OklahoMa Rainey's Black Bottom."
"The Lion King and I."

We had to stop after "The Elephant Man of La Mancha."

But wouldn't you pay good money to see "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamgirls"?

I read this post to my roomate, and apparently we are drunk enough to branched off into any performance mashup of any kind. Do we get extra points for threeway mashups?

Forty-Second Streetcar Named Desire...

Mozart's Requiem for a Heavyweight...

Jesus Christ Superstarlight Express...

Stage Beauty and the Beastmaster...

Cats on a Hot Tin Roof...

Kiss of the Spider-Woman of the Year...

Singin' in the Rain Man...

Easter Parade: On The Avenue Q...

Little Orphan Annie Get Your Gunslinger...

Geez, your dinner conversations are disturbingly similar to my and my family's! LOL

I've had to listen to DH sing "Sisters" for the past week, because he was anticipating seeing "White Christmas." Thank the gods for Netflix, because he got his fix tonight, and maybe now he'll switch to just carols for the rest of the month!

Right after college I worked at Blockbuster Video, and the employees (all overeducated) would play mash-up with the titles. there only two rules, but they were both strict.

1) You couldn't move a word or drop a word or insert a word - the titles had to be absolutely pure

2) No matter how funny the title, you didn't get a point unless you combined the plots in an equally funny manner.

My absolute favorite (still unbeaten, no matter how many times I've explained and played the game with other people), is Regarding Henry V - The King of England takes an arrow to the head and buys a puppy.

"of La Mancha"

"of La Mancha" sort of became our "Godwin" in the game, because so many movies end with "Man". If you fell into having to use "la Mancha", it was like giving up.

Rain Man of la Mancha, The Wicker Man of la Mancha, Marathon Man of la Mancha, Arms and the Man of la Mancha, Batman of la Mancha, Superman of la Mancha, Spider-Man of la Mancha, The Music Man of la Mancha, The Third Man of la Mancha, The Invisible Man of la Mancha, She's the Man of la Mancha, Dead Man of la Mancha, The Thin Man of la Mancha, The Quiet Man of la Mancha, Little Big Man of la Mancha, The Stunt Man of la Mancha, Abbott and Costello Meet the Wolf-Man of la Mancha, The Omega Man of la Mancha...

Oh, we did this with names once - Larry David McCallum Keith Renny Harlin Ellison Wonderland... of La Mancha!

But in our anal-retentive game, Cats on a Hot Tin Roof would get you shot with a suction dart gun, because it doesn't conform to the rules. ;)

Singin' in the Rain Man of la Mancha, however, would both qualilfy *and* disqualify you under our insane rules (see my comments below).

I *do* love this game so.

I actually had a musical mash-up last year, when I was working on both Hair and Tick Tick Boom. Not the titles or anything, but two of the actual songs -- 30/90 and Age of Aquarius. I had both musicals stuck in my head at once, and the notes and beats fit, or maybe I was just really exhausted...

Not so sure - for years I didn't believe they really made Elephant Man into a musical, so they are bizarre enough on their own.

But I always like to hear about how my friends get on well and have fun or share love with their spouses.

About 15% of the appeal of the internet is "Oh, hey, I'm not as crazy as I thought I was!" (The remainder: 35% "Ha! Guess I showed you!", 35% "Poooooorn!", and 15% pictures of cats.)

I started to do plot summaries, but I was hampered by (1) laziness, which is what usually hampers me, and (2) the fact that I don't actually like plays and musicals very much and thus haven't seen most of these.
