[personal profile] destina - Top five pairs of characters, cross-fandoms as needed, that need to sit down and have a conversation and share life experiences so that at least one of them can benefit from it.

This was so much fun.

5. Benton Fraser would really benefit from a few long conversations with Guinan in Ten Forward. Possibly he'd need Worf to spar with him for a bit to weaken him enough that he'd say anything that needed saying.

4. Actually I'd also like to see Fraser work with Sam Vimes for a bit. Fraser's stubborn, principled, and out of step with the values of the world around him, but he can distract you from it with a frictionless surface made of pleasantness and pedantry; Vimes is stubborn, principled, and out of step with the values of the world around you, and he'd spit in the eyes of the gods if they weren't too cowardly to take physical form and fight him. It would be fun to watch. (Also it would take Vimes a minute to figure out that he wasn't dealing with someone like Carrot -- that there was sarcasm under all that courtesy.)

3. Can you imagine Rodney McKay let loose with Q from Skyfall? Yeah, we made something blow up somewhere in the galaxy but it will probably be awhile before humanity discovers whatever it was, so we're fine.

2. I wish that instead of falling in with the Mayor, Faith Lehane had apprenticed with Granny Weatherwax.

1. Batman needs to sit John Winchester down and teach him a thing or two about being a father. Maybe he could have a talk with Bob Fraser, too.

Realized this weekend that when I first put everything up on AO3, I missed one due South story from the ds_flashfiction LiveJournal community (2005) and one Stargate: Atlantis story from [personal profile] oxoniensis' Porn Battle (The Best of Three), also on LiveJournal (2007). I hope that anyone who's subbed to my AO3 account didn't get their hopes up for new content, because I don't have any. Yet. (ahem)

Incidentally, [community profile] ds_flashfiction is still active on Dreamwidth!

[personal profile] runpunkrun - "John and Rodney in 2020"

I wandered away from SGA long before the series ended. I just checked Wikipedia -- are we really left with a status quo in which the city of Atlantis is floating in San Francisco Bay? It's probably completely overrun with sea lions by now.

If they're on Earth ... well, it's only a couple of years between the ending of the series and the 2011 repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell. Honestly, I think John would have had some trouble with that. As godawful as being forcibly closeted was for him, having to decide how open he wanted to be would have been very difficult. He probably goes through some very rough years.

Rodney wouldn't have a lot of patience for, uh, Rodney doesn't have a lot of patience, full stop. He's probably quite successful, with the kinds of patents and prizes that make a winning personality optional. However, based on the bit of him we saw in SG-1, a life of adventure and daily peril is the only thing keeping Rodney on the lovable side of the lovable asshole archetype.

So, in other words, it's only a matter of time before both John and Rodney have made such an entire mess of their lives on Earth that their only tenable option is a heist to steal the city of Atlantis. In 2020, that's the sort of thing that wouldn't even make the news, so it may be happening even as we speak.

Prompts and How To Leave One - behind cut )

[personal profile] wychwood, "Something about SGA! What's the one fic you're sorry you never wrote? What was your favourite episode? Do you still love John/Rodney? How gay WAS John Sheppard? Where in Atlantis would you live if you could pick any room you liked? Pick one or a topic of your choice."

A RL friend of mine recently shared a not-yet-published het fanfic crossover she wrote, and it was hilarious the difference between her characterization of John Sheppard and the one that this community seemed to agree on.

Her John Sheppard was strong, silent, sarcastic, and sexually dominant -- not in a negotiated kink way but like a romance novel hero from the seventies, the kind of guy who pins his lover's hands with one hand while he rips her shirt off her with the other, and she swoons because he's so forceful, and then in the morning he slips out of her bed and leaves her sleeping and it's because he's a Loner who Goes It Alone.

Fandom's John Sheppard was goofy, socially awkward, boyish, and deeply closeted. If he slipped out of a bed and left a lover sleeping, it was because he didn't have the emotional wherewithal to deal with how he felt, and the story would end with the lover chasing him down and forcing a confrontation of the kissing sort. I loved it that he was earnest with women who were teammates or bosses but fairly indifferent to women who were supposed to be love interests, that he really seemed to want a friend, that he was a guy who couldn't quite connect with humans and then an alien city fell in love with him.

Probably neither of those characterizations is 100% canon-accurate -- it always seemed to me that the writers and Joe Flanigan were envisioning the character quite differently -- but I sure like ours better than hers.

[personal profile] woldy prompts: Favorite plotbunny that you've never written?

Man, everywhere I go I'm trailed by the ghosts of stories I haven't written! No way I can limit it to just one.

I'm sorry I never wrote the sequel to American Way where Ray K. would have to pass for Canadian. Chat log from 2002: resonant pictures Ray with his hand on the top button of Fraser's shirt: Very softly: "May I?"

I'm sorry I never wrote "True Minds," in which adult, postwar Harry and Snape become partners in Legilimency, but there's something dreadful in their shared past. I posted a fragment of it here.

I'm sorry I never wrote the follow-up to Experience in SGA; it was going to be called "Innocence" and take place in canon time. At first John thought Rodney was playing some sort of weird psychotic game with him. How else could you explain Rodney McKay -- *Rodney McKay* -- shaking his hand and calling him Major Sheppard? Rodney saying, "Think of where we are in the universe" in the same authoritative tone that John remembered him using for "Go on, take your clothes off, nothing I haven't seen before."

I need to finish what I start, because after a while stories get stiff and unworkable like dried-up play-doh.

Hangups

Enough real life. Let's play a game.

You give me a fannish character I'm reasonably familiar with, and for that person I will give you a hangup. You know: a sexual dysfunction, an unexpected inhibition or aversion, some perfectly ordinary thing he/she simply cannot handle.

If I'm *not* familiar with your character, maybe some other reader will join in.

For the five of you who read my journal and don't also read [personal profile] cesperanza's, why? she finished an SGA story off of some scribblings I had done a long time ago, and this is the result:

Phatic
McKay/Sheppard -- NC-17 -- 1,700 words
"It means it doesn't mean anything," Rodney says. "It's just something you do, like asking people how they are when you don't care, or telling people to look you up when they're in town." "So, pretty much your whole life, then," John says sincerely.
On AO3 or on my site even though Cesca actually wrote most of it.

Also, I've now cross-posted to my site the SGA OT4 story first posted in [livejournal.com profile] sga_saturday: Team Dynamics.

I got the best friends in explored space.

So far I've taken about three hundred books to help rebuild the school library after the fire. I don't know how many people have sent gift certificates directly to Mrs. M., but the librarian knows me by name now.

The offer I made in the original post still stands: anyone who wants to donate can give me a pairing and ask me a question, and I'll write them something little, or maybe not so little.

[livejournal.com profile] thefourthvine gets her smutlet first, though, because she gave me one hell of a prompt.

Lots of people have been doing cool stuff with my stories, and I've been terribly remiss in sharing links.

[livejournal.com profile] viva_gloria did a DVD commentary on Term of Service (SGA, McKay/Sheppard, NC-17) -- find it here.

[livejournal.com profile] ladyvyola did a DVD commentary on Advantage (SGA, McKay/Sheppard, NC-17) -- find it here.

[livejournal.com profile] podfic_lover did podfics of Getting the Message (Due South, Fraser/Kowalski, G) and Subterfuge (Due South, Fraser/Kowalski, NC-17) -- find them here.

[livejournal.com profile] laurie_ky did audiobooks of Tender (Sentinel, NC-17) and Knoxville (Sentinel, PG-13) with cover art by [livejournal.com profile] cybel -- find them here.

[livejournal.com profile] kinseyx did a podfic of The Familiar (HP, Potter/Snape, NC-17) -- find it here.

[livejournal.com profile] zabira did a podfic of Homemaking (Due South, Fraser/Kowalski, NC-17) -- find it here.

[livejournal.com profile] anatsuno did an audiobook of Field Conditions (SGA, McKay/Sheppard, NC-17) with cover art by [livejournal.com profile] cybel -- find it here.

My deepest apologies if you did something and I forgot to announce it.

As always, if you like the work, comment to the reader/artist/commentator. And my policy on any and all such transformations of my stories is: Go for it.

I am so bad about announcing podfics -- sorry to everyone who's done all this hard work and not heard a word from me. [livejournal.com profile] nos4a2no9 has done a podfic of my Due South story, Adorned -- you can find the link here. And [livejournal.com profile] general_jinjur has done a podfic of my Stargate Atlantis story Girlfriend with lovely cover art by [livejournal.com profile] raz0rgirl -- you can find the link here.

Again, here's my policy on podfics, remixes, DVD commentaries, and any and all transformations of my work: go for it.

• Last night I dreamed that David Hewlett and I were doing a little necking, and also a little bonding over how much we loved to hold other people's babies. His baby made no appearance. And I don't even like babies all that much. Give me a kid that can talk back, I say.

• Also last night at 4 a.m. there was a great crash, and now we have no power. (I'm writing this from a coffee shop where I fled for blessed internet.) I opened the windows when the air conditioning went off, and I said to the spouse, "It's amazing how quiet it is out there," and he said, "Well, many of the loudest insects are powered with electricity."

"One Night In Bangkok" came up on shuffle (this would be because I'm a big giant dork and my kid doesn't yet know enough about music to demand that I shape up), and, man, people, that is totally Rodney McKay talking!

I mean, a young, even more defensive sort of Rodney McKay, where "I get my kicks above the waistline, sunshine" translates to "I'm so utterly hopeless with women that I can't tell which are the prostitutes and which are the doctoral students, and it doesn't matter anyway because all of them either laugh at me or throw drinks at me."

Tell me you can't see this

Thanks to whoever nominated Interface, Term of Service, and Undoing for the McShep awards!

Looks like the nomination period is over, but when voting starts, you'll find it here. Worth going over there now, though, because there's a really hot Rodney/John kiss manip. I mean really hot; normally manips just make me kind of nervous and embarrassed*, but this one is just, mmm. (If I'm reading the credits right, we have [livejournal.com profile] newkidfan to thank for that.)

* except [livejournal.com profile] liviapenn used to have these two terrific shirtless manips of Fraser and Ray that were so good, and now I can't find them.
