Of course he's right. *despairs too often*
It's also a paraphrasing of "critics are failed writers" although not quite.

The spouse, as usual, is over on the couch reading Kafka, and occasionally he throws me a quote. That one just seemed relevant to LJ.

Sometimes even the writer despairs of interpreting her own text.
