- I woke up this morning with a stigmatum in the middle of my right palm. If you feel you want to worship me, go ahead, but probably I just hurt myself and forgot.
- In our 4x4 garden we have three tomato plants, lots of cosmos and zinnias, and a giant vine that came up all by itself. The only thing we could tell about it was that it was a member of the squash family. It bloomed, and bloomed, and bloomed, all summer long, without ever any female blossoms to set fruit and tell us what it was -- and then quite suddenly the kidlet lifted up a leaf (the leaves are the size of your head) and discovered two large green stripy fruits underneath.
We thought they were watermelons, but then they started turning yellow. Last week the smaller one cracked and began to rot, so we took it off (to encourage the plant to focus its attention on the other one, because frost is imminent) -- then, to satisfy our curiosity, we took it inside and cut it in half.
It smells like pumpkin. The seeds look like pumpkin seeds. But the fruit is oblong, unridged, butter-yellow, and now the size of a large watermelon.
I promised the kidlet that no matter what it turns out to be, they can carve it for Halloween.
(One year I had an eggplant so big that I carved that for Halloween. It was unsatisfactory, though, because being black it became invisible in the dark.)
- Dead Neighbor's house finally sold, and the new owner is fixing it up. He has a large, silvery, ghost-like dog named Sonic, who comes to play in the yard while his human works on the house. Yesterday I looked over and saw Sonic chewing the loose hanging part of the TV cable.
- I'm wearing a fleece vest! And slippers! Fall is finally here!
