Things which are surprisingly difficult to do when it hurts to squeeze with your non-dominant thumb:

- Open a flip-top shampoo bottle.
- Apply deodorant to your dominant side.
- Fasten a bra. (I may be forced to resort to the grade-school upside-down-and-backwards method for a while.)
- Button and zip a pair of pants. (If I run out of work-appropriate pull-on pants before this cut is healed, I will have no choice but to wear skirts. In winter.)
- e.t.a.: Use nail clippers to cut a hangnail on your right hand. Ouch, damn it.
- Dry a heavy dish.
- Sweep a floor.
- Ironically: Use a knife steel to sharpen a knife.

You'll have to be merely decorative for a little while, then.

I thought the whole point of being married and having kids was the extra hands! Now all my illusions have gone up in smoke!

I've always done mine backwards, then I turn it around and pull the straps up after. Most days I reach back to unfasten it, but if I'm sick or tired I turn it backwards again.

Yup, that's the way they taught us, and that's how I still do it.

I got in the habit of wearing skirts when I broke my wrist in 8th grade. At home I could get my sister to help me, but after that I was on my own. I live in Texas, though, and despite the current situation, the weather here is generally pretty good.

Skirts are awesome to wear in the winter, especially in deep snow. What you do is wear leggings* underneath the skirt & over your boots, that way your legs stay warm, no snow can go down your boots, and when you get where you're going you can pull off the leggings and wear just the skirt.

*I like the slick, work out style 'cause they're a bit more weather proof.

I hope you are

a) healing up

b) developing workarounds and tapping previously unknown wells of ambidexterity.

Good luck!

Uhm - about pants / skirts.

Another thing it's incredibly hard to do when your non-dominant thumb is injured is get stockings / leggings down. I'm having a bout of tendinitis in mine, and everything hurts.

Also....

Pick up the sugar bowl to add sugar to coffee / tea / cereal.
Hold you cereal bowl while eating.
Hold a coffee cup not by the handle.
Pick up a bag of groceries (perhaps not so surprising)
Drive.
Type.

Thumbs. Incredibly underestimated things until you can't use them as much any more.

Didn't help that I kept climbing trees. Never did heal right, and probably my own fault; fortunately it's just a little weak.
