In which I am not in control of the temperature

I have a new apartment. (Amazing what you can do when school districts are no longer relevant to your life.) One of the chief benefits of moving is that I no longer pay for heating ... but the drawback is that I no longer have control of my own thermostat.

It's 34 degrees and there's snow on the ground. I have a window partway open and have taped a cookie sheet over the heat vent.

I remember having an apartment like that during my last few years in graduate school. I was an upper apartment, so I also got the rising hot air from downstairs and omg, it got tropical.

Maybe this is going to be one of those places where the January cold comes right in through the walls? Or maybe I just need to be sure I change into a tank as soon as I come home from my office, which is, of course, freezing cold year-round.

This is one of the things I disliked about living in a refurbished corset factory in college, which is much more awesome to whip out now as a thing I have done than it was to actually experience.
