I figure human tentacles would be maybe about as automatic as eyelids -- you can control them consciously, but it will still keep moving even if you don't -- which would mean that it would be very difficult to prevent them from being so happy to see your platonic friend/partner/roommate/enemy that you'd spend a lot of time uncoiling them from the nape of his neck and saying, "Sorry."
