Sex scene countdown
Mar. 27th, 2003 04:12 amI wondered how many sex scenes I'd written. (Don't ask me why I wondered this; wondering has no "why.") Anyhow, I went and counted, and as best I can tell I've written:
48 m/m sex scenes
and
1 m/f sex scene.
This includes scenes in stories (including a couple that got R ratings because they were tagless and thus no body parts were mentioned; if there were orgasms involved, I counted them as sex scenes), and also scenes that got cut from stories and published as "bonus" scenes linked off the story notes. If you count the three from the never-to-be-finished "Six Weeks," which haven't actually been published anywhere, then it takes the total up to 51.
Those scenes come out of 36 published stories plus Transfigurations, which hasn't been published yet. I counted the Jim/Scott scene from Nuance, but not the Jim/Blair one, because
liviapenn wrote that one. And I counted the scene in Origin even though it was written in collaboration with
kassrachel, so maybe I ought to say fifty and a half.
Now I'm curious how that compares to other writers' work. How many sex scenes have you written? How do they break down as far as gender? What's your story-to-sex-scene ratio?

Date: 3/27/03 06:41 pm (UTC)So that's 2 Sentinel shacks, 38 Sentinel stories (at least one of which has multiple sex scenes in it :-), and 4 Sentinel sonnets or sonnet sequences with sex in 'em. Plus 6 due South stories, one HP story with a pair of sex scenes in it, and one piece of 24 slash, also with sex. That's...um...53 sex scenes, I guess, give or take a few.
Not bad for three and a half years' work, eh? :-)

Date: 3/27/03 06:57 pm (UTC)Wow, that's kind of perversely impressive--my ability to avoid writing sex, that is. Prior to posting End of the Road, it was 16 stories and 4 sex scenes. And that 4:1 ratio feels about right for everything I have in progress or plotted out from here on. Sometimes I wonder whether I really can legitimately call myself a slash writer. *g*

Date: 3/27/03 07:02 pm (UTC)hee. a lot of pwp's and a lot of unfinished stories (most of my stories are unfinished). when i was 14-18, i wrote het, het, het. i -read- het, het, het (*points at your icon* hee. yah, like that).
then, it broke down into writing a bit of het and a bunch of lesbian softcore... wasn't really sex, but it was girl/girl. but only one sex scene. but like, for most of my writing, there was -some- sex in it (what the hell? but yes). if there wasn't sex in it, it just means i didn't write it for long enough, heh. it was probably a 70% sex-to-no-sex ratio.
now that i write mostly fanfic (and mostly slash), i write less sex. i mean, it's like, probably 30-40% sex. and if i write sex, i tend to write sexual-organs-and-orgasms type of sex. unless it's just humping and they never orgasm because i'm not into it. i remember the first real slashfic i wrote. no, it wasn't harry/draco-- i had begun reading (and even writing) h/d and potterfic by then, but mostly i just read it. but it gave me the idea for my original!slash (http://www.core.binghamton.edu/~lorien/story/demons.html). it had sex in it, but i chickened out and wrote het sex (sort of) where it should've been slash sex, but that was plot for ya. i -think-. but i -wanted- to write slash sex, it just didn't fit, i thought. hee. you could tell me what you think if you like ;)
but anyway. i tend to not write sex in a fanfic for 1 reason, mostly: my pairing being harry/draco, i feel i need set-up for it. it's a long journey before harry'd want to fuck draco, and i hate setting it "in the future", and i don't have a need to write other pairings. i've actually written fluff where sex was -never- gonna happen, but that's just... er. well, that's more in my "humorfic" mode, which isn't usually my smutfic mode. i -have- written humorous!smut (recently), but i don't tend to. that's why i feel i need a Good Reason for sex to happen-- 'cause it's usually in a "serious" fic.
so i guess i'm just so caught up in set up and characterization, i thwart my natural need to have the characters go at each other like rabid bunnies on crack~:)
usually, in almost any fic i write, i have sexual references of some sort, even if just in passing, simply because that's how people -are- in my head, otherwise it's just no fun. i mean.... gah. what else is there? hee. talk, talk, talk-- one gets tired of it~:)
and i like -never- write angstfic of the sort where people are just frustrated and there's all this ust and it never goes anywhere, simply because they're like, zero fun to write (for me). so i definitely know what you're saying. the sex is everywhere. hee.
i don't think it's a smuttiness factor (though it is) as much as it's... just... when people are being "natural", if it's a romance at all.
and i write a lot of romance.
that, or complete fantasy (though it tends to be fantasy romance), but i don't write so much "just fantasy" in the potterverse since it's -her- fantasy and i like my own~:) hee. *sigh* i hope that answered...er... something. but yes. mostly i write slash now, but before fanfic, i wrote het (big surprise). with smatterings of femmeslash, if you could call it that~:)

Date: 3/27/03 07:15 pm (UTC)51 under your belt? I hate you.
But you also wrote The Familiar, so I worship you.
I hate you and I worship you. I'm very confused.
Anyway, 51 out of 36+. I guess it depends how many stories are "here's an interesting situation, lets play this out" and how many are "Starting from this point, and this premise...", since the second group are more likely to have more than one passionate moment within the story.
The gender breakdown? Well, most of the universes that you write stories for tend to have more engaging male characters (and certainly more male-male pairings that are dying to be explored) than female characters and female-male pairings. This is just from my perspective, though, and doesn't actually answer any of your questions. Sorry 'bout that.
How much sex?
Date: 3/27/03 07:26 pm (UTC)19 stories (14 Harry Potter, 5 LotR).
15 sex scenes.
Once I finish 'Sex, Drugs and Death Eater Rock' that total will be:
20 stories.
19 sex scenes.
But it seems to be that certain stories have an excessive amount of sex. Because of the 19, 10 don't have any sex at all.
m/f? - Ha! What's that?

Re: How much sex?
Date: 3/27/03 07:32 pm (UTC)If you count the 27 chapters of 'Primer to the Dark Arts' as separate stories, then it's:
45 stories.
16 m/m sex scenes.
Of course there were a lot of sex scenes in a 170-page Slash-romance. Oh. I forgot one. *edits* There were six sex scenes in Primer.

Such as, "How many couples are having an orgasm right now?"
"15!"
- from the movie Amelie
Not, by any means, is what you ask a silly question just thats what popped into my head when I read it :)
sorry, going away now....

Date: 3/27/03 10:54 pm (UTC)Oh wow - just going by what I've posted/archived, and counting by sessions, I'd say 29. That's 15 in Herc/Xena fandom, 11 in HP, and 3 in original fic.
How do they break down as far as gender?
Lets see... 2 m/m/f, 19 m/m, 1 f/f/m, 3 m/m/m, 3 m/f, and 1 m.
What's your story-to-sex-scene ratio?
Uhm, I have a few stories with no sex, and a few stories with multiple sex scenes, but the majority are 1/1 I think.
Good God, this was like trying to do homework! Statistics or algebra or something equally horrid. *shudder* And I'm not certain I got it right! (Thank heavens nobody's grading.)

Date: 3/28/03 07:53 am (UTC)But it's more like wondering how in *God's* name I'm going to arrange the limited number of smut scenarios in a way I haven't done before that's *also* in character.
ah, thank you search & replace...
Date: 3/28/03 08:59 am (UTC)Heh.
(no subject)
Date: 3/28/03 09:20 am (UTC)So that's about 0.6 sex scenes per story, or alternately, about 1.3 sex scenes per story with actual sex in it.
(no subject)
Date: 3/28/03 10:01 am (UTC)That's a lotta sex.
I'm really sick of it now. But I'm still writing.
(no subject)
Date: 3/28/03 05:30 pm (UTC)54 stories published in zines or on-line, or about to be published soon, for a total of 688000 words. Nineteen of them have no sex scenes, but they total only 37000 words.
There are 82 sex scenes. They divide up as 67 m/m, 11 f/m, 5 solo. (Plus one f/f story with a fade-to-black.)
That's 1.5 sex scenes per story, or 1 per 8400 words.
Taking only those stories with sex in them, it's 2.4 sex scenes per story, but still 1 per 7900 words.

Date: 4/11/03 11:32 am (UTC)Well, then, I very rarely write sex. And it's more and more rare as I go. I can think of two m/m real pieces of smut that I've written in the Harry Potter fandom. And then two m/f. No real f/f smut yet. 1 m/f from another fandom recently.
And in the popslash fandom, hmmm. Maybe 10 m/m and 3 f/f. Before that, I had two f/f in earlier fandoms and 5 m/m.
This, though I've put out easily 80+ stories over time.
