If you buy a Res an iPod .....

.. she's going be eager to fill it up with the 11GB of music she has stored on her laptop.

When she goes to transfer the music onto the iPod, she's going to discover that she can't do that until she upgrades the version of iTunes on her computer.

When she tries to upgrade iTunes, she'll discover that she can't download the new version until she upgrades her system software from Jaguar to Panther.

And in order to install new system software, she'll first need something big enough to back up all 11GB of music ...

... which is why she bought the iPod in the first place.

ITunes 4.5 will work, but finding an installer for it appears to be rather difficult. A prelim google search had only found me dead links and reviews.

Co-worker thinks he has an installer on his computer. He's checking now. Someone, somewhere has to have an installer for 4.5 left over. They only announced it in April.

Ok, we haven't located 4.5, but we did locate 4.0. With 4.0 you can capture streaming audio, a 'fault' that was the only 'improvement' in the next upgrade.

... and, now that I think of it: if 4.0 is on the computer, and 4.5 is on the iPod, won't the iPod just tell me, "OK, go upgrade the software on your computer so they match"?

As far as I can tell, 10.1.4 should be able to run itunes 4.0. I'm not sure about the ipod/computer compatibility problem.

If you do just want to backup and upgrade, the ipod should just appear as a new hd if you plug in the firewire connection.

I'm not as up on mac stuff as I should be, and I typically just tinker around with stuff to figure it out, so I'm not quite sure what to adivise you to do. Probably ask someone else. ;) Sorry!

Just about the time I finished downloading it, the Tech Goddess called and said, "Don't panic! I'll lend you a portable hard drive!" So I think I'm going to do it that way.

Do be careful! Once loaded onto an iPod as music, you can't get the music back. It's a file sharing lockdown. This is how I ended up with two albums that are forever trapped on the damned thing. You can, of course, load the 11GB as plain data using an iPod's plain drive function, but you won't be able to access it from the iPod to listen.

just FYI, the ipodlounge.com downloads page lists several freeware/shareware utilities that let you copy music files off the hidden folders on an ipod.

This is a late response (just got home from camping) but you can use the iPod as an external hard drive. Connect it via firewire to your computer, and an icon will appear. Drag and drop your music files to the iPod like you would to a disk. When they're all copied, delete them off your computer. Once you've finished upgrading, use the "import music" function under the file menu to bring the files back over.

I was going to do that, but it turns out the Tech Goddess is going to commandeer one of her sons' external hard drives and lend it to me for backup. (They've got a family in which computers outnumber humans by about 2 to 1, so she assures me they can spare it.)
