Friends and assorted creatures, what should I do for my birthday?

We're having an event for the spouse's birthday next week -- not a party, per se, but at least something that involves a gathering of people who don't live with us in our house -- which frankly uses up my never-very-copious supply of extroversion for at least a month.

I'm sure the spouse and the kidlet will put together anything I ask them for. I'm torn between wanting to be pampered and wanting to be left in splendid solitude.

What do you like to do on your birthday?

For my birthday, I like to go out to eat at a fancy restaurant with family or just my guy. Few people, moderately large budget.

Eat something indulgent that you normally feel is too expensive or too time-consuming to make yourself.

Go to the spa for a manicure/massage/hedonistic activity of your choice.

Ask for 24 hours totally on your own.

24 or more hours totally alone with no responsibilities and food pre-prepared in the fridge. Then I indulge in early bedtime and sleep like the dead until whenever I wake up naturally. Read and nap and internetz and write all day. Take self out to a movie or something later, if I really feel like dealing with others, but I rarely do. 'Druther listen to the clock tick or all the music of my own that I want to without needing to wear headphones, and be quiet for awhile. :-)

These days, I try to get all of us together and do something fun--last year, we visited a botanical garden (surprise fruit and veggie tasting!), then mall shopping for my gifts (nice haul), and then dinner in a good steak house (death by chocolate cake for dessert!) We celebrated The Man's birthday at the same time (his is a month before mine), and we all had a great time; it's more special to get together like that when the girls aren't at home, anymore. I also allowed myself an alone and indulgent day, as I did back when the girls were at home and I needed it even more. I'm a firm believer in b-day celebrations lasting more than one day. I'm a lot to celebrate, after all.

I generally have to work on my birthday, since it falls at a time of year that always seems to be frantically busy. If it's on a weekend, then I usually have to spend it with my parents (my mother's is a week before mine), which isn't exactly what I call fun. What I'd like to do is take the day off work if necessary and stay in bed all day. Watch movies, read, internetz, whatever--just do it in bed.

I went to minigolfing with some friends, followed by pinball and a meal.

Do a day on your own (or with a friend if you'd prefer) at your local equivalent of this: http://www.steannes.com/home.html
(Watch the video. This place is incredible. I love it there.) Come home in time for a quiet dinner out with the hub and kidlet. Perfect end to a refreshing, renewing day.

What do you like to do on your birthday?
Obtain a nice cake, and then avoid throwing a party because it seems too difficult.

My last bday was super fun and low key. A couple weeks ahead of time, I posted to all my local friends that I'd be hanging out in my favorite bar from 6-9 and hoped I see some of them there. About a dozen people drifted in and out all evening, and brought me fun cards and tokens (totally unexpectedly) or bought me another round. There were lots of hugs and laughing, and when I got tired I went home, and didn't have to wash dishes or clean up anything. Awesome!

I'm heavily in favour of having a party and inviting people I like to it. Preferably, I think of a dress-up theme, because I have fun admiring and talking about people's cool costume ideas (I loved my sister-in-law's 'come as a painting' party).
