Last night I had a temp job checking IDs at an Irish music festival. This was a triumph of assignment choices, since this was the first time I had ever seen an ID from the new state; if anybody had a fake, I certainly wouldn't have been able to recognize it.

There were far too many of us doing the work, and, since we put a blue wristband on everybody we carded, very quickly every young-looking person who came to buy beer was already marked. So I spent a lot of time people-watching. (Dear unknown pair of women: when you find yourself in a public place having a loud shouted argument with a man dressed as a pirate, possibly you've had too much to drink.)

And I was enjoying looking at a lot of kilts.

First, there was a kilted tiny toddler, so small that that kilt undoubtedly had a diaper underneath it, who was adorable.

Then there were guys in kilts with flip-flops or with nondescript black shoes, which was nice enough.

Then there were guys in kilts with black high-tops, which was a look that I liked quite a bit. Kilts with combat boots ditto.

Then there were guys in kilts with shirts like police officers and firefighters wear -- short-sleeved white shirts with official-looking badges on one arm. And for some reason, this was a look that I found quite unexpectedly stirring.

I swear I never used to find any part of a police uniform sexy before fandom.

I totally get that. I was watching an old episode of Top Shot today (shooting contest reality series on the History channel), and this lovely former British soldier wore a desert camo kilt and combat boots to the firing range. I was entranced. *chin hands*

Men in kilts, especially uniform-y ones... they make such a lovely picture, especially if they have nice, sturdy calves. *happy sigh*

The kilt n' boots combo is especially interesting if the boots are all muddy and the bottom of the kilt has a splatter pattern of mud on the hem.

There were two men at the recent longbow/barebow archery tournament at the club I used to go to (I was doing the scoring for them) who were wearing kilts. Fine, all well and good. One was Black Watch (I think), the other one plain.

Then there was a man wearing a plaid. Properly. (And I bet he was sweltering in it, too.) No, I didn't dare ask him what he was wearing underneath.

My former significant whatever-the-hell, The Piper, competed at the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow a couple of weeks ago.

This is NOT him, but it's my favorite picture from the event, one of the members of the winning Grade 1 band:

found here.

I have a GREAT picture of The Piper high-fiving a leeeeettle boy-fan in a kilt, but I don't have it at hand. I actually have to dig up a photo of him for some Austin event program this evening, so I will throw that puppy into a web directory so it can be shared. It really is pretty cool.
