One year in college my best friend gave up teasing me for Lent. Every time she failed, she put a quarter in a box for charity. Every time she thought about it loud enough that I heard her, it was ten cents. The starving children ate quite well that year.
I always try to think of something to give up, but given that I don't drink, I don't smoke, and I work in the nonprofit sector, I feel like most days I have given up quite a lot, thanks.
I'm trying to give up harboring resentment for lent, in the hope that some weeks of practicce will leave me with a habit that will benefit me and others afterward. Like arguing, teasing, complaining, etc., it takes discipline to keep coming back to it, especially when I slip a bit.
