December Daily: Current fandom
Dec. 10th, 2014 08:34 pmRight now I get all excited if a "Captain America" story shows up on my screen, especially a Steve/Bucky story.
I love the character of Steve Rogers, because he's good, but he isn't easy. He's interesting, too, because he's a stranger to our century, and he can take an outsider's view of things we take for granted; he turns the everyday world into science fiction just by looking at it.
There are a lot of different ways to write Bucky Barnes, but he can be approached as something like a feral cat, which is an approach I enjoy because it allows you to do that thing I love where you get physical intimacy (or at least bed-sharing) very early and have to wait for a long time for emotional intimacy.
One thing I don't like about the fandom is that some really fine Bucky-recovery stories are being labeled "Hydra trash" (inaccurately, in my opinion), which means either I have to miss great stories or I have to read things without knowing whether or not they're going to trip my torture squick.

Date: 12/12/14 12:41 am (UTC)Rate of Recidivism turns out not to have a Hydra Trash tag on it after all -- I thought I remembered it did -- but it has a really daunting wall of tags, and I approached it with great caution. But I ended up enjoying it and not being scarred by it at all.
My torture squick is very specific. Severity isn't the problem; detail isn't the problem: what I can't handle is where the harm is (1) intentional, (2) creative, or at least intelligently applied for the purpose of maximizing suffering, and (3) written in such a way that I have trouble staying out of the POV of the torturer. (Manipulated participation by the victim makes everything worse.) I just hate it when something reminds me so vividly that I have my own well of creative cruelty inside me, however common that may be!
So I would love input from you on stories that might be safe for me to read!

Date: 12/12/14 09:18 pm (UTC)Hmmm, yeah, when I tag for torture I usually mean "intentional infliction of pain/terror on a person helpless to escape or resist"--I don't know what qualifies as creative in that department, but that's what's going on in my stories that I tag that way. So. That's what you're missing there; probably nothing you want to read.
I think the sort of, hm, core meaning of Hydra Trash Party stories is that they aren't about comfort or recovery, it's just about rolling around in the awfulness. So people will occasionally tag a recovery story as Hydra Trash Party when it really hinges on the fact that Bucky or Steve was suffering trash party type abuse, but most trash party stories are really just about the hurt, and generally in a way that I think you would not enjoy, from your description. Is it the post-trash recovery that you're looking for?

Date: 12/17/14 02:54 am (UTC)I'm not especially looking for post-trash recovery -- I'm just looking for any and all good Bucky stories that are safe for me to read!

Thank you
