December Daily: the impossible

marginaliana asks: What one thing would you most like to do in your life that you think is impossible for whatever reason (financial, laws of physics, etc)?

Last fall, I wrote an article on the tiny-house movement, and ever since then, I've had this yearning to live in a tiny house.

I think the appeal is partly a generalized longing for a simpler life with less stuff in it. (I mean, I just moved house a year and a half ago, and come springtime I'll have to do it again; who wouldn't wish only to own enough stuff to fill an old railway car?) And part of it is the Lure of the Little Bitty, and part of it is an introvert's longing for a tiny space with no room for anyone else in it.

And that's why I can't have it -- because the kind of tiny house I imagine is a one-person space, but I don't want to toss the spouse out in the street.

(Actually in my fantasies he has his own tiny house, close enough for visiting but far enough away that none of his stuff could migrate into my space!)

My partner and I have that arrangement (albeit with smallish-rather-than-tiny houses, and still with plenty of clutter), and it works wonderfully. It helps that we don't have children and we prefer to sleep in separate beds; I think if either of those conditions aren't met, it gets more complicated. :-)

Oooh, interesting answer! My partner is feeling the 'live simpler' urge right now so we're sort of moving in that direction, although without making any dramatic changes as yet. Thanks for answering!

You could have two tiny houses adjoined by a covered walkway, so you could visit during inclement weather in comfort-and then get home easily.

This is exactly what I want. Except my partner is somewhat claustrophobic and needs a less-tiny place to live, so we couldn't even do the two-adjacent-tiny-houses thing.

Wow, I just got this new channel on my cable (actually, not new -- used to be BIO, now fyi) and they have this show called Tiny House Nation that feature interesting houses). I love that show, and it actually makes me want to live in one but knowing myself, I don't think I can last long in one.

I have a tiny house! it's a bungalow court, and my dream is to fall in love with someone who lives in one of the other bungalows.

Oh my gosh! I don't suppose there's a floor plan or something online that you could link to? It's easy to find photos of the exteriors, but of course what's interesting is the inside.

It's amazing how well-designed the space is. It feels a lot bigger than it really is.
