[personal profile] cathalin asks: What story do you most wish someone would write, that for some reason you aren't writing/won't write (original or fannish)? Who would it be about, and what would happen? (And if you can say, why would it be something someone else and not you would write?) Why would you like such a story? What tropes or ideas or etc. would it explore that you wish you could find more of?

I would really like someone else to write the definitive BBC Sherlock "taking account of Mary Morstan" story.

I would like it long and plotty, with canon-typical adventure. I would like it mostly about establishing a relationship of some sort between Mary and Sherlock, since the other two sides of that triangle are well established. I would like the story to have as many surprises about Mary as the canon did.

I would accept a wide range of resolutions, from Mary dead the way she is in book canon to happy settled threesome, but what I want is fifteen thousand words on how they got there, wherever there may be.

And I feel like a real wimp for saying this, but I tried to write it, and last summer's absolutely palpable stew of Mary-hate and Moffatt-hate just made the whole idea of wading into it feel icky.

I don't blame you. To misquote Moffat about his own fandom, "I've learned to stay away from fans. It's not pretty when they blow." I've seen a few melt downs, but that one was something else.

That, said, I'd like that story too! I'm just... sort of afraid to go look for it.

I would pay so many virtual cookies for that story; that would be pretty awesome. I loved Mary when I saw her, and what I adored was how surprising she was. I completely understand the staleness on writing it yourself, though. I haven't written word one in this fandom, though I devour the stories. So, while I would love it if you wrote it, I shan't throw stones.

How Mary and John navigate the revelation of her whole other existence would be cool to read. The Moff always gives fans a lot to work with when it comes to his female characters and BBC Mary is a ripper.

There's Intemperance by Basingstoke, but that's in Sherlock Holmes fandom not Sherlock (TV). It does give an excellent Mary, though, and resolves the three of them very satisfyingly.

A bit late but wow, this is a wonderful answer! I'm not in Sherlock fandom at all, though I follow a few people who are and have read a couple of fics, but I'm a fan of the show, big time. I'm fortunately barely aware of the wank in the fandom - but I can imagine, for sure haha - but this sounds amazing. I think her character on the show is fascinating, and I have a zillion questions, yes, plus would love to see exploration of her relationship with Sherlock.

It's hard to imagine Sherlock and Mary being anything but sort of terrifying together, but if anyone can handle that, apparently it's John!

It's sad when fandom ~hate prevents people from exploring complex characters' possibilities. In short, if you ever write that fic, I'll be there!
