Since I don't have questions for the last two days, I'm going to answer (the interesting parts of) the New Year meme, last seen at [personal profile] sara's.

And in January, I'm thinking I'll come up a couple of days a week and ask you questions!

1. What did you do in 2014 that you’d never done before?

- Became a landlord.
- Ate dolsot bibimbap, which was literally the best thing I ever ate, at a Korean bistro in a town I never go through in a state I don't live in. Woe.
- Petted an armadillo.
- Worked in a library, but not for very long.

2. Did you keep your New Years’ resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

Last year I wrote on DW, "I'm hoping, in 2014, to stop worrying about the years and look for ways to live in the minutes, which is where real life happens."

I did not do too well at that.

This year I'm going to make the less abstract resolution of washing my hands every time I arrive at home or at work.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?

Nope.

4. Did anyone close to you die?

My father.

5. What countries did you visit?

Just the U.S. Not even very much of the U.S.

6. What would you like to have in 2015 that you lacked in 2014?

Financial security. (So far, so good.)

7. What date from 2014 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?

August 9, the day my father died.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?

Whole new job in a whole new town. Getting the house cleaned out and rented.

9. What was your biggest failure?

My big lesson this year has been in asking for help when I need it and admitting that I can't do all of everything.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?

Depression and anxiety. A hell of a lot of migraines.

11. What was the best thing you bought?

Weird. With all the money I've spent this year, you'd think I'd be able to remember something.

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?

The kidlet has built herself a whole new life in a whole new town with grace and good cheer.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?

The police.

14. Where did most of your money go?

Getting the old house fixed up. (And more of it is going into a plumbing crisis even as we speak.)

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?

Went through a phase there where I couldn't get really excited about anything, so it was a joy to notice that I was looking forward to Christmas so much.

16. What song will always remind you of 2014?

None, really.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:

i. happier or sadder?
Happier.

ii. thinner or fatter? Seriously? That's a weird question.

iii. richer or poorer? Richer.

18. What do you wish you’d done more of?

Meaningful rest (as opposed to staring at a computer screen). Asking for help. Reading. Yoga.

19. What do you wish you’d done less of?

Staring at a computer screen. Doing stupid temp work.

20. How did you spend Christmas?

Hanging out with the family, then joining some of the spouse's fellow students for dinner.

21. How will you be spending New Year’s Eve?

In my quiet house, reveling in not having to go anywhere.

22. Did you fall in love in 2014?

Already in love.

23. How many one-night stands?

No.

24. What was your favorite TV program?

None, really.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?

No.

26. What was the best book you read?

Neil Gaiman's The Ocean At the End of the Lane.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?

The Ony Wytars Ensemble's "Byzantium to Andalusia," beautiful early music from various nations with an Arabic influence.

28. What did you want and get?

A real job with health insurance.

29. What did you want and not get?

A new laptop to replace this poor old thing.

30. What was your favorite film that you saw for the first time this year?

How To Train Your Dragon 2.

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?

I was 50. I think maybe we went out to dinner? I want something out of birthday celebrations that I'm not getting, but I'm not sure what.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?

Going to bed earlier.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept?

Nice colors; doesn't itch.

34. What kept you sane?

Lexapro.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?

I'm more interested in fictional characters than in public figures -- I don't want Chris Evans, but I'll definitely take Steve Rogers.

36. What political issue stirred you the most?

Hooray for marriage equality!

37. Who did you miss?

Dad. Every single day.

38. Who was the best new person you met?

I have lots of great new co-workers, but I don't know any of them well yet.

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2014.

That I need to be OK with letting people see me be weak.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.

Don't have any.
