December Daily: dogs

anitac588 prompted me to talk about either dogs or Chris Evans, and since I don't have enough prompts to fill the month, I'm going to do them both on separate days.

I'm definitely a cat person. I'm a little wary of dogs. Years ago a character in a novel described dogs as "hectic and chaotic," and that's always what I'm expecting when I meet one.

But lately my experiences with dogs have been better. I may be mellowing, but I also think that I'm meeting more well-trained, well-socialized dogs than I did as a child.

On our Thanksgiving trip, we saw a lot of service dogs in airports. You know that alert and slightly worried expression that some dogs get when they're working? I'm charmed by it. I was charmed by the behavior of the humans who interacted with the dogs, too, and let me tell you, these days I don't spend nearly enough time being charmed by humans I don't know.

My brother brought his dog to visit my mother's house the day after Thanksgiving. He's had her DNA tested, and in addition to being literally 100% that bitch, she is also mostly chocolate lab with some shepherd and several assorted terriers in her ancestry. (There's more useful information and less drama in dog DNA testing than in the human kind.) She has a cream-colored circle on the bottom of each paw, just behind the paw pads. She's a sweetheart.

I don't know if I'll ever have a dog. Their main flaw is that they don't purr. I always said the same thing about babies.

LOL!!! Thank you for such an honest and personal answer, I love it, particularly since you are a cat person.

Experiences with dogs can be so unique to each individual. I was brought up to fear dogs, to perceive them as filthy (to be fair, that was said for all house animals) and it wasn't until we got a dog that I learned how much I like them.
(we had cat previously, and I loved him, absolutely adored him, so I am not only a dog person, I was a cat person first ;)).

The dogs don't purr, but they do some weird yoga-like poses while lying on their backs, lol. It's almost like purring, but not quite.

Can I add a prompt? I so: What is your comfort reading? Fic, high-brow literature, commercial fiction, whatever. I am sorely in need of some comfort reading.

Many of your fics are my comfort reading, incidentally :-) So I was wondering what serves this purpose for you, if anything.

It's not their fault. Like us, they need to learn and have something useful to do or else they cause trouble.

Hee! My brother's dog doesn't yet know me well enough to be comfortable doing any yoga, but she got up on the couch and put her nose on my thigh.
