The concept of nice smut
Jan. 19th, 2003 04:56 pmSo today the door comes off one of the cabinets. It's too heavy for me to hold it steady and wield a screwdriver at the same time, so I ask the spouse to come and hold it for me.
This puts our faces a couple of inches apart, so we mug at each other for a while, and then I say, "I wrote a scene like this for a story once."
"You did?"
"Yeah. The guy with the screwdriver says, 'I love you,' and the other guy drops the door."
He gets this goofy grin on his face and says, "Aww. That sounds so nice." (This is what he always says when I describe a particular story to him. Either that or he remembers that they're nice but forgets that they're explicit. He doesn't seem to be able to keep both of those concepts in his head at the same time.)
Then he says, "You know, you may actually have created a completely new kind of smut."
I sigh. "I've told you before. There is nothing new about this. Most slash is like this. Hell, a lot of romance novels are like this. The only thing that's not like this is the smut that men like."
He's silent for a while, and then he says, "Isn't that sad?"

Date: 1/30/03 07:37 pm (UTC)One of these days I'm going to get around to posting the handful of random scenes that did get written, including the screwdriver one, Blair's heterosexual freak-out, and two sex scenes. Wait, three sex scenes. Did I mention I write sex scenes first?

Date: 1/21/03 01:03 pm (UTC)About a third of the way through he asked me from the next room, "I thought you said this was NC-17 rated?"
I shouted back, "it is!"
I heard him make a doubtful sound. "Okay.."
When he reached the end, I perch on the couch and ask him what he thinks.
"Well. It was subtle."
I blink for several minutes and have a sinking feeling. There was no plot in this. It was pure unadulterated sex with no redeeming social value. Well, okay, I couldn't resist throwing a little plot twist in the end to explain things, but...
"Was it sexy?" I ask plaintively.
"Well, it did turn me on," he says evasively. He's always scared to beta my stuff.
"When?" I leap.
"Right around the thrusting."
This he calls subtle.

And, not to be a parody of myself or anything, but at first I read that as trusting, and thought, "Hey, yeah, that always gets me, too ..."

Date: 1/31/03 07:42 pm (UTC)I feel it's a little sad both ways, though. Don't get me wrong, I *love* it that most of the smut I read are filled with love and/or emotion; it turns me on. And I think it's infinitely richer than just the action. But still, the fact that I love it - the fact that even in slash, more often than not the women are being bound to romantic-love ideology - I don't know, it sort of feels like the flip side of the same coin. Even though I'm definitely enjoying it.
Oh, I'm being way too mouthy on somebody else's page... I'm sorry, Resonant!!
