Some days in my reading of fanfic I have a very distinct moment of "I'm going to pretend very hard that between those two activities you two got up and took a shower."
As both a reader and a writer, I don't really care if the realistic details are there. I just write (and want to read) the fantasy, which doesn't involve when people go to the bathroom, wash their hands, bathe (unless it is to have sex in the tub), or do any of the other minutia of adulting that isn't part of the plot. If someone doesn't, say, rinse off before they hop in a swimming pool: Fine with me. If someone doesn't have sex and then take a shower after: Okay. NBD. They are not a dirty, filthy beast of a human being.
See, I generally agree with you both about whether people really need to be clean and about whether the writer needs to tell me they're clean ... but when you get an ass involved, sometimes I need to believe there's been a break for a wash.
Indeed. :D I only ever write fade-to-black sex, but even so if it can't reasonably be inferred that they got cleaned up before going on to do other things, I will usually throw in a mention of a shower.
Heh, details like that provide opportunities! I once wrote a whole post- coital story set in the bit of time when one character convinces the other to get out of bed for a shower and sheets change rather than going to sleep in the wet spot. It was fun interaction.
