So far 40 doesn't feel that differently from 39. I have to tell you, though: I think my generation is getting much better midlife crises than my parents' generation did. I'm writing a novel; my cousin is going back to school to study marine biology; my best friend is going to try her hand at illustration. Much more fun than an affair or an expensive sports car.

I had a good birthday, except for the part where my kid gave me the gift of a cold, and the cold virus invited its bacteria friends over to colonize my sinuses. I think the person who developed antibiotics should be canonized.

The three-dimensional haul was pretty good -- two books, some money for the iPod fund, a waffle iron that looks like a robot, and no sweaters from the in-laws so far -- but what I'm really excited about are my fannish gifts:

Switchknife wrote me a story!A lovely wartime Harry/Snape, full of dreams and danger and just enough hope to make me happy all over.

And! Duckpuppy drew me Transfigurations!Draco! Just see if you can look at him and not want to help him unbutton that white shirt the rest of the way down!

Happy belated birthday. When you actually get to shopping, opt for a big white iPod, not one of the fashionable but limited-capacity minis.

And 40? You're still a tot.

In HP fandom, 40 means I'm raising the average slasher age considerably.

Yeah, I don't get the appeal of the minis, unless people have both a mini and a full-sized one, in which case I say they ought to give one of them to me.

Oh, happy birthday! I hope that all goes well on the novel-writing and book-selling fronts for the next year...

Oh, an excellent wish. I should have had you handy at candle-blowing-out time, because my mind just went blank.

Happy Birthday to one of the world's best slash authors! Your "Broadway Hotel" would be right up there in my Top 5 out of all my fandoms.

(Also, thanks for setting me up on LJ, back when I first wrote to you about BH. You're obviously a lovely person as well as a wonderful writer!)

Hey, I forgot about that. You're the only person I ever successfully pimped.

And thanks!

Hey, I celebrate my birth week, or even my birth month. Or, due to my brother's gift-buying habits, sometimes my birth year.

I felt similarly about 40, last year, but strangely, today I realized I'll be 41 in two months, and I had to sit and think about that longer. *g* It wasn't a bad feeling, just...strange. Somehow I don't seem to feel like some part of me thinks my 40s should feel. Or something.

Happy belated.

I know what you mean. The manager of my coffee shop turned 40 a month or so ago, and I thought, "Damn! Elaine and I are the same age? But she's so adult and together!"

Yes! Exactly! There's a woman at my church only a year or so older than me, and she seems so much more...not mature, but... I guess adult. She's on her third marriage (only one was divorce), and has a son who's about 20. I can't even project myself into this situation, and it's not so much that it makes her seem more adult, really, as I feel myself more...callow? Unexperienced? in comparison. And I lack many of the traditional markers of social maturity: the spouse, the children, the professional job. Much of it I think is more in my head, about previously unexamined preconceptions of what it means to be "an adult," but it's still real. *g*

Aww. Thanks!

I'm loving the birthday greetings so much, it makes me feel bad that I don't do better at remembering everybody else's birthday.

Hope you're feeling better after that bout of flu! And best of luck with the novel this year. :)

Thanks for linking, BTW. And make sure to make up for not being able to celebrate properly on your birthday by celebrating the coming weekend instead!

Or possibly all month long, yes!

I hope your RL issues smooth out soon. And (I admit) I hope they'll work out in our favor, i.e. with you here on LJ and not elsewhere.

Happy belated birthday!

As for being forty, forty is the new thirty and I hope it'll be a really great year for you and your sinuses.

The birthday that freaked me out was 27. My mother tells me 50 is great but she's having a little trouble with 70.
