Me: Here's a spam subject line. 'Buy all your prescription needs here.'

Spouse: So what?

Me: Well, I don't need to buy any needs. I've got enough needs as it is.

Spouse: That's not a bad description of commercial culture, actually. You buy needs. It's like drinking salt water.

OT, but I love that icon (and randomly found the painting, too, googling for cupcakes). Mmm, I wish I had occasion to bake a bunch of cupcakes…

It's like drinking salt water.

Doesn't that make you throw up?

Reminds me of one of my very favorite lines from Eliot: "The giving famishes the craving" - something I often say of fandom. And it is like salt water, isn't it ...

(Perhaps slightly more ... erudite ... than prescription needs, but still! *g*)

LOL! I just happen to be studying consumer society this semester and this has come up in my text. The modern individual is a bundle of inadequacies that can only be treated by spending money on this or that product. Over and over again...

My mother used to make me gargle with hot salt water when I had a sore throat. Not sure if it helped, I was usually too busy gagging.

Now mustard powder and water, that's supposed to be very good at making you throw up. Fortunately I've finished my lunch so the idea isn't bothering me.

Hee! Wasn't he also the guy who quoted Russian literature while bringing out the recycling? Does he have a younger brother by any chance? :0)

Me too, actually. I planned to make some for my birthday, but the spouse and kid sneaked out and bought me an ice cream cake -- which was lovely, but somehow afterwards I felt cheated of cupcakes!

Yeah -- which dehydrates you, which makes you need to drink more water ...

He was, yes. He has a fascinating brain.

He has one older brother, who believes in marriage so strongly that he's tried it three times now, so sorry.
