That's my kid
Nov. 1st, 2005 09:16 amKidlet's best friend Phoebe came over to trick-or-treat last night. I always think the kidlet is a terribly girly kid, but Phoebe leaves them in the dust. Phoebe is definitely going to be sorted into Sparklypoo. A conversation, overheard while they played with Polly Pockets. (These kids are both almost seven.)

PHOEBE: Let's pretend that I'm going out on a date with Sam -- this is Sam -- and you're going out on a date with Jeffrey -- that one can be Jeffrey -- and you come home from the store and I'm not ready and you say, 'What are you going to wear? Let's wear something that matches!' and I say --
KIDLET: Hold on a minute. I'm training a flying horse.

Date: 11/13/05 03:01 am (UTC)Imagine me on holiday in middle-of-nowhere, Spain. In a rather nice farm house type place. Found a copy of the Cosmo Sex And Relationship Book (or something like that) and one of Sex And The Single Girl (famous '60s book). Which was the most interesting/useful? It was certainly not the Cosmo. The advice is oddly wrongheaded. And yeah, SATSG doesn't tell you even one way to have an orgasm, but it's a heck of a lot more intellegent and helpful. Oh, that and it doesn't tell you because it assumes you know and gets onto the interesting bits.
Only seven Polly Pockets? I had a dozen.

Me, gettig into it: "--and the horse rears and throws off Number 2 Boyfriend, Oh NOES!! and he falls down the cliff and breaks his arm and ruptures his spleen and you have to rush out from the ball to rescue him--"
her:"NO! That's stupid! He should wear his seatbelt."

Date: 11/2/05 05:35 pm (UTC)I never had a herd, just the one, requisite black stallion and a couple of pals who showed up from time to time. (I still see him out of the corner of my eye, sometimes.)(Especially when I'm really, really tired. *g*)

Date: 11/1/05 09:28 pm (UTC)I see Sparklypoo girls among my son's classmates, and neither of us have the least idea how to communicate with them. And in his case, no desire, either.
My son is far friendlier with girls than most of his peers -- and his girl friends do tend to wear pink accessories and change clothes 4 times a day. But those girls also are perfectly happy to practice their Jedi lightsaber fighting techniques and as a group they tend to come up with ingenious (sometimes dangerous) engineering projects.

My sister is a Sparklypoo wannabee, but her soul is entirely Slytherin. I suppose that means she'd be stealing all my make-up if we lived together.

Date: 11/2/05 04:27 am (UTC)It kind of worries me that Phoebe apparently finds this sort of thing fascinating. Another kind of game she always wants to play is "Pretend you were my mother and you went to work and when you came home I had dyed my hair! And you said, 'How could you dye your hair that color?' and I said ..."

Date: 11/2/05 04:45 am (UTC)Sexual, I should say, but in no way informed or in control of their sexuality. My sister is really on the outskirs of the popular girls at her school, and recently, the other girls got in trouble for passing pornographic notes in class. Pornography about the boys, no less; my mother suggested it was a kind of sexual harrassment. But the notes really revealed a deep ignorance of matters sexual and emotional; it was just the equivalent of FF.net fic.
I am fascinated by these girls. I don't know if I was just more sheltered, or if I and my friends were all tomboys, but it's often hard to believe that my sister and I came from the same parents.
(Mostly I think it's fashion. When I was 12, it was 1994, and everyone was wearing loose floral dresses with heavy shoes. It's hard to be sexually precocious when you look like a refugee from the duller kind of commune.)

Date: 11/15/05 05:31 pm (UTC)Hee! That could be it. The clothes for the 6-12 set are certainly risque these days. I saw one columnist who called the style Prostitot.
I gather that girls get sexually preoccupied very young these days, but, as you say, it's not exactly sexual desire; I think it's just what my mother used to call "boy-craziness," taken to a new and frightening level. I hate to see girls so frantic to get a boy's attention.
