I want to buy my brother a CD for his birthday.

The only two CDs that I know for certain my brother likes are Portishead's "Dummy" and Le Mystere Des Voix Bulgares.

If you knew someone who liked those two CDs, what would you buy them?

I can't help you on number 2, but if I knew someone liked Portishead, I would absolutely buy them Goldfrapp, which kind of sounds like Portishead after they've spent years listening only to old James Bond soundtracks.

"Martina Topley Bird" with or without "Tricky", though he probably already has them.

Well, I have both, but I don't think I could extrapolate someone else's taste in music based on that - I can't even extrapolate my own. (The last two CDs I bought were Eminem and the Kronos Quartet.) Maybe a gift certificate? *g*

How about "Blues for Transylvania" by Muzsikas

Something from Massive Attack would be a really good bet. Sneaker Pimps, Goldfrapp and Zero 7 would also be good choices. :D

Something of Goldfrapp, Massive Attack or k's choice.

Massive Attack's Mezzanine and k's choice's Cocoon Crash.

Hmm, yes.

Hmmm. Miranda Sex Garden, maybe, or Mephisto Walz. I adore Portishead, but then I adore a wide variety of music, so it's hard to say.

I vote for a gift certificate or similar. *g*

Something by Ladysmith Black Mambazo. It's an African male a capella group that sang backup on Paul Simon's "Graceland" album. Or, possibly, something by Rockapella.

I second the Varttina (great Finnish folk-rock, very Eastern-European-influenced), and also suggest VAST -- the album "Visual Audio Sensory Theater" heavily samples Le Mystere Des Voix Bulgares and has a good electronic beat.

But you don't have to take *my* word for it! :)

VAST, "Pretty When You Cry", from "Visual Audio Sensory Theater": http://s61.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2BAAJPRBRK4KB1KVDARWZFJX9J

Does he have an Ipod? I can't keep up with my nephew's taste in music, so I always get him an Itunes gift certificate at Circuit City for his Ipod.

Nothing whatsoever to do with the post

Arrgh :/ I have just come across the wealth of SGA fic on your website, and was devouring greedily, and writing up wreaths and wreaths of adoring praise (I really was, I'm not exaggerating) and then the bloody system won't deliver my email because there's something about a blacklist block on your gateway.

If you want the feedback (and I'm an author too, so don't be coy ;) I'd be happy to send it on again if you can give me a valid addy; otherwise, I'm not going to write it all out again HERE but I do want you to know that you've jumped right into the select number of authors whom I think are *incredible* and really ought to be writing original fiction for publishing because they're THAT good. Yes. Not just wonderfully written and well characterised and with hot sex scenes and exciting plot, but really imaginative and original, too, and you get things across in such a few words, and yet still impart a wealth of description, which is a great gift.

Now I shall take a break and read some more of your work at a later date, before I suffer a surfeit *giggles* (What would a surfeit of slash be like, anyway?)

Making a note of it.

Did you ever notice that bands you're totally unfamiliar with all sound fake? I mean, if I'd never heard of Pink Floyd, I'd be going, "Oh, come on, now. That doesn't even sound plausible!"

I wasn't nuts about Portishead, but I mostly listen to scratchy archival folk, so there you go.

Hey there! I've gotten three e-mails from you tonight -- are you telling me you sent more? Don't you know that when you give me too much feedback, my head begins to grow until my neck will no longer support it?

I'm really glad you've been enjoying the stories. I've just added you to my address book; maybe that will solve the bounce problem?

I third or fourth the Zero 7 suggestions (I have Simple Things, and can't stop listening to it). I'd also suggest something like the Gotan Project's La Revancha del Tango, which is several kinds of sexy mixed up into one luscious disc. Good luck, mon capitain!

Ooh good, I hope he likes it! I have Black Cherry and Felt Mountain and love them both.

A really excellent music reference site that might help you in the future is allmusic.com - you can search for a band and see similar artists, the band's influences, etc.

I noticed everyone else reccing Massive Attack, who of course complete the triptych with Protishead and Tricky, but I think Martina's voice exceptional.

*g* Erm, since my bands have names ranging from "Suburban Kids with Biblical Names" or "Dogs Die in Hot Cars" to "Fugazi" or "XTC", I must admit that no unfamiliar band name ever sounds fake to me!
