This was really interesting. Thanks for posting it.

Regarding the "Stella being a punk" thing, it works for me. I went to a private Protestant girls school where I knew girls a bit like her. Rich, smart, confident and slight giddy with it. Went out of their way to be scandalous but knew they'd make it to law school. Thinking about it, maybe I was one.

And it was a bonus to get the soundtrack. I'd never heard of the Gang of Four and I'll look them up now.

Oh, man, if I can create another Gang of Four fanatic, I'll have done my good deed for the day.

Really, they were terrific, and everybody copied them, and once you hear their stuff, all "alternative" music will be revealed as simply Variations on a Theme by Gang of Four. (Michael Stipe admits that he imitates them.)

I saw them live in a small concert hall when I was in college, and they were fantastic. It was a dancing crowd, all except for a fortyish Asian couple right in front of us who sat there with polite listening expressions on their faces as if they were at a really enjoyable performance of Mozart or something.

Interesting point about Stella. I think hanging out with the bad boys is fun for a lot of girls, and of course it's safer for the ones with money.
