I haven't finished reading the commentary, but I wanted to comment on this one thing. Table Talk. Hey! I was there too. Although under a different name and I only posted/hung out in one or two areas.
Anyway, I was just struck by that and the "hey! I know this!" type of thing.
Cool! Another TTer! I hung out on Private Life and Mothers, mostly, and of course I used another name there, too. (One of the things I love about the internet is the opportunity to lead a Daring Double Life without ever actually having to leave the house.)
I miss TT. Occasionally I check into The Perfect World and -- that other one that I've forgotten the name of -- but it's just not the same. (For one thing, neither of them has The Great Beast.)
I've just read this, and of course I'm blown away once again by the story, and charmed and fascinated by the glimpses into your beta process-- but I have to comment and ask, what name did you have on TT, if you don't mind me asking? MWT, PL, and Imagination practically defined my early adolescence (... whether or not that's a good thing is still up for debate, of course; but I segued easily from TT-obsessed thirteen-year-old to slash-obsessed seventeen-year-old and I'm still in school, and haven't yet passed out drunk in any liquor-store alleys...).
That was amazing. The effort that went into it! I'm in awe. This was the one I wanted a commentary for, and I can't believe how thoroughly the request was answered! Thanks so much.
Have to ask though, where in the UK did people come from that answered the 'latch' question? 'cos where I'm from it's definitely *unlocked*. *g*
Really? "on the latch" means unlocked? That totally blows my interpretation of the song -- I mean, why would he be so resentful of her if he's saying "the door of your love's unlocked"? ... unless he means she cheats, which I suppose is possible ...
Anyhow, I'm glad you enjoyed the commentary! I wasn't sure I had anything to say.
Ooh, I just, would you believe, read that story for the first time today, and loved it, and now alluvasudden there's commentary?! This must be, like, my birthday or something.
TT was fabulous. Curse them for going pay; curse them, I say.
Yeah, it was a good thing I had help so that I didn't make everybody want to beat Stella to a pulp.
Oh, and something I forgot to mention in the commentary: When I went looking for birthdates, I discovered that the actress who played Stella was, like, ten years younger than CKR. Gee, thanks, Hollywood.
Well, they cast her long enough after they established the characters were the same age that I guess either they didn't remember or else they could have been age-blind. At least I hope so! </Pollyanna>
Oh, I just wanted to say... your soundtrack? I have very nearly =every single one= of the records you mention. It's like you were borrowing my collection or something.
That was really excellent. It was neat to see all the little bits and pieces that went into the story. But I must admit the thing that freaked me out the most was finding out you're originally from NC. Now I don't feel so bad about being the only ds fandom person here. :D
This was really interesting. Thanks for posting it.
Regarding the "Stella being a punk" thing, it works for me. I went to a private Protestant girls school where I knew girls a bit like her. Rich, smart, confident and slight giddy with it. Went out of their way to be scandalous but knew they'd make it to law school. Thinking about it, maybe I was one.
And it was a bonus to get the soundtrack. I'd never heard of the Gang of Four and I'll look them up now.
Oh, man, if I can create another Gang of Four fanatic, I'll have done my good deed for the day.
Really, they were terrific, and everybody copied them, and once you hear their stuff, all "alternative" music will be revealed as simply Variations on a Theme by Gang of Four. (Michael Stipe admits that he imitates them.)
I saw them live in a small concert hall when I was in college, and they were fantastic. It was a dancing crowd, all except for a fortyish Asian couple right in front of us who sat there with polite listening expressions on their faces as if they were at a really enjoyable performance of Mozart or something.
Interesting point about Stella. I think hanging out with the bad boys is fun for a lot of girls, and of course it's safer for the ones with money.
