For several months, the same guy has been running an ad on the back of Fantasy & Science Fiction for his series of books.

The guy's name is Burt Libe.

The series is called Beyond the Time Machine, which in the URL gets abbreviated to BTTM.

You can imagine what I actually see when I read that ad.

I blame slash. I used to have a nice clean mind.

I like the way you think. ;-)

Do you find it strange that he's blowing that much money for the back page and yet has a geocities website?

Not really -- he's far more likely to get new readers out of a back-page ad. The people who will see his website will already know about him and probably be fans. But I do think he's likely paying out more than he'll earn on the book.

It just reeks of self-publishing desperation. And while self-publishing has its place, I just don't think it's in the genre market.

It does, I guess. Most authors would just try and arrange book signings, instead, and build local readership. It's a tad more respectable. :-)

Until you said that, it didn't, but now that you mention it ... hm.

The books really look pretty lame, don't they?

Despite the fact that my mind could hardly be more corrupted by slash, I still don't know what you see in that ad. Help?

Well, I see 'burt lube' and butt .. but it did take a second look with a rude attitude

Yeah, my mind gives me Lube instead of Libe and BOTTOM instead of BTTM.

Nice clean minds are overrated. Really.

My mind is evidently not corrupted enough. I am not getting this! Waah.

You're not the only one, and it becomes pretty lame when spelled out, but I'm reading Libe as Lube and BTTM as BOTTOM.

You SO should have been sitting next to me when my mother asked what was so funny about that Old Navy ad where Megan Mullally chirps "These bottoms are the top!" as twinkish models in pajamas dance around in the background.
