I'm back from my trip to visit the in-laws. I will never catch up. Even on my smallest filter (the one I use only for communities and recs pages), I can only get back to about June 8. I despair of the filters that have actual people on them. I hope none of y'all did anything fascinating in early June, because if you did, I'm going to miss it.

([livejournal.com profile] makesmewannadie and [livejournal.com profile] laurashapiro, I'm so sorry I didn't get back to you. I suffered an attack of severe introversion and couldn't bear to have further contact with humans, even humans as cool as you are. Maybe next time.)

One thing I have figured out, though: Against all odds, and possibly in violation of the laws of reality, during the period of June 5-20, my in-laws were actually less weird than fandom.

Is it fascinating that I posted a poll (http://darthfox.livejournal.com/614664.html)?

What happened from June 5-20? Are you talking about the crazy msscribe thing? It's my understanding that all of that happened way in the past, and thus your in-laws have been less weird than fandom since late 2001. :-)

Ooh. I love polls! (But you should put links to the stories, on the theory that all pimping is good pimping.)

The msscribe thing happened in HP, and apparently in SGA there was another one of those anonymous slam-book things, though it got TOSsed and deleted before I came home.

Together these things created an explosion of posts on my flist, as people who don't post very often weighed in on anonymous hate memes, or the responsibilities of BNFs to the fandom, or sockpuppets, or wankery and what ought to be done about it, or ... I mean, there's quite a bit of porn and chat and silliness, too, but mostly it just seems to be this stuff.

Oh! I'd forgotten already about the SGA hate meme thing. (So you can see how much it affected me.)

I would add links if it were possible to edit polls! But, sadly, it is not. Wah.

You made me consider laws of reality ... since I guess you are bound to have less relatives than there are people in fandom (even though at times it might seem like that's not the case?), the higher weirdness factor in fandom is not - mathematically speaking - against all odds.

Although amusingly phrased.

Actually I was referring only to my mother-in-law and father-in-law, with Drunken Sister-in-Law in a supporting role, phone calls from Addicted Brother-in-Law, a too-brief visit from Relatively Normal Nephew-in-Law, and the looming ghostly presence of Father-in-Law's Long-Dead Psycho Father. Way fewer people than fandom, unless fandom is mostly sock puppets, which is more plausible than usual this week.

Mathematically maybe they outdo fandom in terms of average weirdness per person?

*lol* ghost-dad?! Now I'm thinking of due South.
Tragedy seen from a distance still looks like comedy - at least when presented in a suitable form. I managed it once, made the whole class laugh their heads off with my woeful biography; Fay Weldon says it's the only way to cope; I think you're doing fine?

If there were mostly sockpuppets, then the w/p factor would indeed be much larger in fandom. But I think that would be too much work to keep up. Oddly enough, though my take on the issue was rather different to most opinions voiced, I've been unable to finish what I have to ever since that meme. Go figure.

BTW, I wrote you an e-mail in your absence.

They were broadcasting World Cup all over town while we were out there. I swear some of those announcers do exercises to develop their lung capacity so they can make the word "¡Gola!" last even longer.

We, on the other hand, watched a lot of baseball. Baseball is a really boring game.

The only sporting events I watch are football, Olympics and golf.

But the only one I get really, really, really obsessed about is the World Cup. I am smitten!!! (Note icon of footballer lips with cryptic message addressed to him by other footballer. I am too arcane for my boots.)

Maybe next time - I spent my Saturday watching TiVoed World Cup matches, so it was allllll goood. Also, we are out your way next week - when "your way" is Galena, which is like three hours from you, so probably in the "nice idea, no way to execute" category. *shrugs* Someday. There is even talk of us moving to IL in several years, leaving this hotbed of real-estate inflation and going somewhere reasonable...

Wow. Having just come back into the land of 100% humidity, I can't imagine moving from there to here. Though the in-laws could sell their house and buy ours and nine others just like it.

Galena's nice -- hope you enjoy it! It is too far to meet you, though.

We'll be back out west in August, but I'm not sure whether we'll be in the 'burbs or whether they're going to want to take us someplace else. Will let you know as things develop.

I know - I hate IL weather, but as Himself pointed out to me, I don't go outside that much. I'm more of an indoor cat.

So, it's hot and muggy, eh? Fuck. The Squid hates that kind of weather and I'll end up with his hot little self plastered unhappily to me, fussing.

Maybe in August - we're not going anywhere, and I'd be thrilled to give you a break - I'm v. low-key and low-maintenance to hang out with, I'm told.

If I remember correctly, it's usually a bit cooler in Galena, but, yeah, muggy. I hate it, too, and I fuss, but at least nobody has to carry me around any more.

Hee. Yeah, I'm a bit fussy too. But since it's my husband who wanted to go out there for OMG a week and a half in JUNE, he can carry me AND the baby (figuratively, of course.)

I've been fighting the evil water demons for control of the basement.

I started writing a Doctor Who spinoff!

I don't know, within HP most seem to be having a very appropriate OMG! WFT? reaction. And then the silence of horror. You aren't experiencing the silence yet? Don't worry, it's coming. Then people you haven't spoken to in ages will sidle up to you and whisper, "You know that fucktarded thing we fought about two years ago? Let's forgot it - we must ban together against the crazy." ;) Enjoy!

You know, the crazy thing is, I was in HP fandom for at least the latter part of that whole sad story, and I was not aware of any of it. Most of the names aren't even familiar to me. It's like reading a detailed account of a wank that happened in, I don't know, "The A-Team" fandom.

Totally out of it, I was. Not that I missed anything fun, apparently.

Don't worry about it.

I'm sorry to have missed you, but I know that family vacations can be very stressful and make people want to hide. {{{Res}}} Maybe next time.

Meanwhile: [livejournal.com profile] makesmewannadie lives here? I didn't know that! Nifty!
