I'm hoping this isn't a violation of LJ etiquette, but my unemployment just ran out, so ...

I'm looking for freelance writing assignments. Magazine, book, textbook, cardpack, whatever. I specialize in how-to and nonfiction for kids, but also have quite a bit of experience in general feature-writing.

If anybody's got leads or suggestions, contact me at resonant8(at)att(dot)net.

Of course, if anybody knows how I can get paid to write slash, by all means let me know.

*hugs* Lack of money does suck muchly.

Have you thought about going to your local bookstore and getting a year-old Writer's Market? [livejournal.com profile] isiscolo told me that most of the information should still be good, and they tend to sell those books for less than $10, since they're older. Also, your local library should have several books of writers' resources.

And if you find that slash-for-pay magazine, let me know ;)

I didn't know that they sold the older ones. I'll take a look -- thanks!

Y'know, if it wasn't the very definition of copyright violation, I've often thought that I'd love to pay my favorite authors to write slash. =D And then, I'd pay really good male voice actors to turn it into books-on-CD.

...if I ever get so rich that I can afford lawyers to defend us, I'm totally doing it. =P

Hey Neetee, why do you think I'm going to law school? Just for you and your slash habit, baby!

And that, my darling, is why we're getting married just as soon as you get suckered into moving out here. =D

Hi! (I'm a friend of Tradescant's.) Someone recently told me that http://www.craigslist.org/ is a good place to look for freelance writing assignments. I just took a peek at the NYC listings (I don't know where you live ...) and there were a couple of freelance writing opportunities listed. Anyway, there's a Craig's List for a lot of cities in the U.S.

Also, there's a listserv for people with Ph.D.s leaving the academy that has a lot of career advice that isn't necessarily just applicable to folks with higher degrees. There are resources on breaking into technical writing, corporate writing, and freelance journalism. http://www.woodrow.org/phd/WRK4US/WRK4US_Discussion_Index/wrk4us_discussion_index.html

Finally, I know there are several books on Amazon about breaking into corporate writing, which seems to be the most lucrative (albeit the most boring) option.

Anyway, I imagine a lot of this is already familiar to you, but just in the hopes of giving you an idea or two ...

Good luck!

Those are both good ideas -- I'll look into them. Thanks!

If you're talking about freelance magazine stuff, generally you pretty much have to query with specific article ideas until/unless they know you well. This is pretty much how I made a living for much of the past year (although right now I have a part-time job as well) so if you want to talk details, email me or contact me on AIM (see my userinfo).

[sigh] Yeah -- I was just hoping that somebody else would, um, basically do my work for me.

You know, there ARE mags that pay you for slash so long as you change the names. Check your local adult store. *grin*

I think there was a Harry Potter fanfic in which Remus Lupin wrote erotic gay stories to earn a living...heheheheheh...

On a serious note, I agree with above, Craigslist is /awesome/. It's how I found my flat for the summer, $300 cheaper than any real estate place I looked on. It has it all. If you're looking for housing, jobs, money for being a medical guinea pig, sex, drink, mindless time-wasting, you can find it at Craigslist.

*wanders off, singing Craigslist's praises*

It's probably a bad thing if I want to write for publications that I'm not willing to be seen buying, isn't it?

Probably, but it pays the rent :D Ask Remus.
