Did I ever tell you how I came to have a library card in a town I've never paid taxes in? We spend two weeks every summer with the in-laws, and the only two books in their entire house are a lowfat cookbook and one of those Time-Life America books from the bicentennial. So every single day I go and hang out in one of the two library branches that are in walking distance, and one day I went to the witchy-looking redheaded librarian and said, "Listen, my in-laws have never had a library card, and we're here for two weeks, and I know this is against your rules, but ..." and she interrupted me and said in a deep and meaningful way, "I understand." And she got me a library card.

Anyhow, we're off to the in-laws' for two weeks of beautiful weather and excessive television, and that library card will help me survive. I'll probably be able to pick up e-mail every couple of days. I'll see you all after the 24th. Don't break fandom while I'm gone, because I'm going to need it badly when I come home.

What a great story. I totally know what that feels like, too, to visit someone who has no books. Once, during an extended babysitting stint at my sister's, I found myself reading junk mail out of pure desperation.

Have a good trip! Or, barring that, enjoy the library!

BY THE WAY

HI.

I couldn't make a fanmoot happen, but we should definitely hang out while you are here! You, the kidlet, me, the Squid, in whatever combinations - we could make a lazy day at home of it, away from the in-laws. And I have many books if you need to borrow something non-library. And a big backyard, and I live near some parks and playgrounds. Do you still have my phone number, or should I re-send it?

Also, the weather is FREAKING GORGEOUS right now. Good time you picked to come...

That would be cool! I've still got your cell and your gmail address. You can e-mail me at resonant8(at)sbcglobal(dot)net if you don't still have the in-laws' numbers.

The weather is always gorgeous out there. Once I asked the spouse, "Why do they have a weather forecast here? The weather never changes," and he said, "Why do they have a traffic report at home? The traffic never changes."

Libraries saved my life when I visited London. I got a temporary card using the hotel address, and had free internet to boot!

How in the world did your husband grow up to be such a cool, well-read guy?

Good luck!

I once visted my sister and couldn't figure out why her house made me feel so uncomfortable. And then I realized. No books and no cats. Crazy!

Your fic as a PDF?

I'm trying to get pdfs/single html files available of the H/D "classics" fics so I'm messaging all the authors on the list. Feel free to say no - here's the mass message bellow:

As the author of one the fics on the Harry/Draco Classics List (http://gossymer.livejournal.com/101912.html), I was wondering if you would mind making it available as a PDF/single html file for easy reading? If you don't have the time to do it, I wouldn't mind doing it for you ^_^ You could then make it avalable on your lj (or an alternate online site) and I'd be able to link to that post/site for people who a) can't access certain sites (like LJ) b) are travelling/on vacation c) would like it on mobile devices.

If you would rather not have your story made available in this way, feel free to say so - I just thought it would make it easier for a lot of people to get into some of the earlier fics in the fandom :)

My stories are available as html files on my site (http://trickster.org/res) -- how is that different from 'single html'?

If it's something different, I certainly don't have a problem with your doing the conversion and then e-mailing a file to me to put up on my site.

I've noticed that most mobile devices/electronic ebook readers can either access pdfs or html files and not both - I was hoping to be able to link to both on the list. The html file on your dite is perfect, though I'd love to make pdf files - you could put them up on your site, and then I'd link over to them/the pdf download page :)

I see! It sounds like a good idea (especially since it's one that doesn't require any effort on my part)!

Ok, just had a few final Qs for the pdf:

1) Would you like to include your contact information?
a) Your email?
b) Your lj?

2) Do you want to include the current online address of the fic?
a) on an archive so people can review?
b) on LJ so people can leave a comment?

3) Is there any other information you'd like included? Fanart done for the fic(s), an afterword/note from the author etc.

4)Do you want the files password protected? People can comment to your post asking for the password in a screened comment. This way you can keep track of who downloads the file(s)

Oops -- I'm sorry -- I didn't realize I had never answered this.

For both 1 and 2, it would be adequate just to include a link to the story on my site; if they go there, they'll find links to whatever else they want, including the main site, this LJ, and my e-mail address. I assume we're talking about Transfigurations? The website URL for that is http://trickster.org/res/transfig.html.

Actually that will cover #3 as well, since there are story notes, the DVD commentary, artwork, etc., all linked off of the story on my site.

Unless password protection is standard for all the work you're doing, don't do it just for my sake. But I would appreciate your including an adult-content warning.
