The new cat had surgery today and came home in a very upsetting condition, in pain and growling (though never biting) and unable to walk. It hurts to love an animal, sometimes.

He fell down and hurt himself badly about a month ago, and it turns out he has some bizarre condition where his leg bones where they enter his hip joints just, um, crumbled away. The vet says he can live a normal housecat life, but he'll never be a jumper again.

He's shaved as if he were wearing a pair of pink leather pants. This will probably be funny tomorrow.

It's very upsetting when they react badly to sedatives or have a rough recovery from anesthesia. The condition and the surgery are upsetting enough, and then that! I'm sending healing thoughts, and hugs.

I'm sorry to hear about your little buddy.

My Pan can't jump everyplace, because she only has one back paw, and okay, so she's kind of chubby because that means she doesn't get all the exercise she could.

But you know, I just rigged my place to be handicapped-access for her in her favourite menacing spots. It wasn't hard or expensive and it doesn't look that bad, and she can still get up where she wants to go, except for the kitchen appliances, and, I mean, I didn't want her dancing around on our 900-year-old gas stove anyway.

It'll be okay, is what I'm saying. Not everything that you want for him, of course, but not so bad, really. Pan and I send him snuggles, and liver snacks made from mind powers.

PS: Pan has also had the pink shorts, though not for medical reasons. I never did think it was funny, but I did get used to seeing it after a few days.

My Dixie isn't a jumper because she just isn't...the vet said part of it mostly cause our other cat is and she knows she'd never get away.

Oh no, poor kitty! I knew someone with two sibling-cats that might have had the same issue. Their hips were all wobbly, they walked like they were kind of drunk, but they were lovely and reaching middle age when I knew them.

*Hugs you*

Ow. I had a cat with one missing hip, and he continued to be a jumper, catch birds even. Two missing hips? I don't know. I guess what I'm saying is that my old Pogo recovered far more functionality than I expected. I'm keeping a good thought that your fellow gets a good result, too.

Poor baby. I'm sure once the surgery's healed he'll find life a lot more comfortable. I've got to get my geriatric dog to the vet this week--she's got degenerative disks in her lower back and either it's just age (she's over 16) or the meds aren't working anymore, her left hind leg will barely support her. Makes bathroom trips an ordeal for both of us, and I have a feeling she won't make it through the winter. (Our 18-year-old cat, on the other hand, is remarkably chipper for an old lady who only has one tooth left.)

Pats on your little guy...
