My first work-related question

... or, in retrospect it's possible that 'upgrading' me to Windows Vista right before the week when I have to put out three bulletins was sub-optimal.

So. Who out there is an expert in Microsoft Publisher for Vista?

Our bulletins and newsletters are laid out booklet-style -- i.e. they print sideways on both sides of the paper, and then are folded to make booklets.

Sometimes I want to print out one spread but not another. (Usually this is because the front and back covers are color but the rest of the booklet is B&W, and I'm trying to save money by only printing the cover side on the expensive printer and using the cheap printer for the B&W side.)

In the old Publisher, this was so easy that I actually wasn't aware I was doing it. I'd hit Print, specify printing only Page 1, Publisher would give me a dialog box asking me if I wanted to print Page 1 as a separate booklet, I'd say no, and what I'd get would be a printout with page 1 on the right and page 4 on the left. Just what I wanted.

In the new Publisher, if I ask for only Page 1, I get only Page 1. If, in the print page range section, I type "1,4," I get page 1 on the left and page 4 on the right. If I type "4,1," I get ... page 1 on the left and page 4 on the right.

The workaround I came up with for the bulletins was just to move the pages around. But in two weeks I have to put out a newsletter, and I really don't want to have to move those pages around; it's a 16-page document and I like being able to make the master page attach page numbers automatically.

(I meant to be able to boast of my novel-revising progress today, but between Vista and another damned upper-respiratory infection, all I've done is curse the PC and admire the beautiful scenes I'm not writing.)

was it set up as a 1/2 letter booklet 5.5x8.5 with a side fold? i set a quick one up and when i say 1,4 it gives me 4 on the left and 1 one the right.

(btw, your problem isn't with vista; it's with office 2007 vs. office 2003.)

I'm not the one who set up the file -- it's a legacy from my predecessor, and every week I replace the art and update the text. Maybe I should try creating one from scratch and see if that helps.

(The bulletin is 1/2 legal and the newsletter is 1/2 ledger, if that makes a difference.)

I think I'll save these experiments for when Holy Week is over!
