The kidlet was reminding me of a time twenty years ago when I did a candy exchange with a friend/fellow fan in Australia. (This made a big impression on the kidlet, who was small at the time.) And I realized that there are people I have frequent interactions with and still don't have any idea where they are.

People still say Oceania. I don't hear Australasia so much any more, though.

Setting up a poll like this is when I learned that when it comes to knowledge of geography, I am -- how do I put this -- an American. Checking Wikipedia going, "Oh, yeah, that's right, there ARE countries!"

I hear people outside Aus/NZ use Oceania to mean 'that random selection of leftover countries', yeah. Bit of a bewildering mix of countries from a geological or geopolitical point of view, but it's very much The Leftovers.

Some people in the U.S. have a similar view of everything between the coasts. The spouse once heard a co-worker call it "flyover country."
