Scenes from my life

The kidlet has a friend over to spend the night. We had videos rented and activities planned, but the two of them decided they'd rather act out "The Sound Of Music."

Two lines of the title theme -- two lines of "How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria" -- the scene where Maria arrives at the mansion and is welcomed by the butler -- the scene where the children step forward and announce their names (and these two ten-year-olds know all the children's names) -- and then suddenly they get bored, and the friend announces, "This is a remix! The captain's nice and Maria's mean!"

Now the kidlet (as Maria) is in handcuffs and the friend (Mother Superior) is slapping them around. It's like the musical theater version of Calvinball.

This is the same friend who asked the kidlet, "Did you get any B's?" and when the kidlet said, "Yes, in math," she replied, "My B was in reading. Don't judge me!"

It's looking like she's going to make some friends I'll really approve of at the new school. With this girl she was actually able to have conversations about books, something she's never been able to do before except with us -- even at the private school, her friends were mostly into either boys 'n' fashion or TV.

I loved just being invisible in a chair and watching them. They also put on some live-action public service announcements involving girls who got kidnapped and beat their kidnappers up with their backpacks.

I once worked (by no choice of my own, I'm crap with kids) part-time in a Waldorf kindergarden, and one of the boys and one of the girls spontaneously decided to put on a puppet show for the rest of us. It started out traditional enough, with the puppets doing this and that and talking to each other, but at some point the boy got carried away, and one of his puppets started EATING EVERYONE as well as the set. I was in tears I was laughing so hard.
