On the plus side: We were scheduled to take a weekend trip the day after Christmas, and none of us really wanted to go except for the kidlet, and lo, the weather made it suboptimal to drive up to northern Illinois for the weekend.

On the minus side: The weather made it suboptimal to leave the house over the weekend, on account of most of the world outside the house being full of snow.

Also? The in-laws bought the kidlet a rock-polishing machine for Christmas. The eternal squeaky grinding, it invades my dreams.

Good thing we all like each other. Good thing we went to the library before Christmas. Good thing we have a brand-new Wii Fit. Good thing the stuff has stopped falling and the driveway is shoveled and I am cleared to leave in the morning for writing, mocha consumption, and a Sherlock Holmes matinee.

Is there something you can oil on the rock polisher? I got my own kidlet a rock polisher for Christmas, and it doesn't squeak at all. In fact, the noise is kind of soothing, like a tumbling mountain stream. Of course, it's also in the basement, so maybe I shouldn't be one to talk about whether it's annoying.

Enjoy your day out!

My rock tumbler, as a child, had to (by Law of The Mom) be set up in the garage, beneath a box, with a thick wool blanket over that. It subdued the noise enough to make it tolerable. :D I suggest a similar setup! Within the limits of your floor-plan, of course...
