Previews

Went to see Sherlock Holmes today (about which yay and squee, of course), but when I was really missing fannish companionship was during the previews.

First "The Sorcerer's Apprentice," and somebody please, please tell me that that kid is older than 17, because the preview slashes itself.

And then "Iron Man 2," which just confirms what I have long believed about Marvel: They're not really making entertainment; they're slyly diagnosing the unacknowledged fetishes of rightish Americans.

First we have a little clip of Tony Stark being rather fey while he recites lines that make Republicans have to adjust their trousers ("You want my property? You can't have it. But I have successfully privatized world peace!") -- and then he's down and being stalked by a long-haired guy ... with an accent that sounds Mexican to me, though I see in IMDb that he's got a Russian name, but, anyway, clearly an immigrant of some sort ... with, um, flaming whips. Really, all we need is some prison sodomy and some autoerotic asphyxiation and the talk-radio fantasy world will be complete.

Okay, why did you get all the good previews? When I went to see Sherlock Holmes on Christmas Day, all I got was a bunch of terrible romantic comedies.

Also, if you're talking about the lead in Sorceror's Apprentice, I remember watching that guy on Canadian shows when I was young, so he has to be at least 25. Good to go. :-D

Boy, how did I get something so obvious wrong? -- yes, the Sorcerer's Apprentice. I haven't seen Nicolas Cage looking so likeable since "Moonstruck." I guess the reason I thought the other guy was a kid was because at first I thought I was seeing a preview for one of those Percy Jackson movies.

There were about five previews, and every damned one of them began with an airplane-cam view of a landscape of skyscrapers.

You got genre previews? I'm SO jealous. We got previews for stupid... I'm not even sure what you'd call them. A cross between a frat boy movie and a rom com, I think. I was really hoping for Ironman 2 too.

It was a 10:30 a.m. show -- wonder if that makes a difference? There were about six of us in the audience, and only two women. So maybe they thought they were talking to more of an explosion-and-superheroey sort of audience.

Yeah, that was funny. I can see why people want to write in the fandom; Stark's voice is all kinds of fun.

(That's fine. LJ is mostly vestigial for me at this point.)

Oh, dear, yes, I did forget about them. And the way he has to purse his lips so that he and the audience can share their enthusiasm for the display, because appreciation of half-naked women is nothing if not shared with other men.

OMG this! This is exactly why the Iron Man 2 trailer makes me feel vaguely nauseous.

I liked it better once I started redefining bigotry as kink.

tell me you're going to write us some Holmes/Watson. Please, pretty please? I was squeeing all the way through and LOVED the movie so much I'm now rereading the canon just to delight in the original byplay (not quite as much fun as Holmes saying, "my tongue is going numb--then I'll be of no use to you, Watson.")

I also adored the Iron Man II promo--Downey is having such a splendid time in it it just makes me grin.

I know! I laughed so hard at that tongue thing that the guy in front of me turned around to look at me.

I wouldn't rule out writing it, but on first viewing, I felt like the movie really gave me everything I wanted. And this Mary is not someone who's going to step aside lightly.
