I just finished re-reading Good Omens, which was even more delicious in light of the dozens of Aziraphale/Crowley stories I've enjoyed since the first time I read it. But I began thinking about Warlock.

You remember Warlock? He was one of the switched babies; he belonged to an American diplomat and his wife; Heaven and Hell lavished much care on his upbringing until they figured out their mistake. When we last see him, he's being sent back to America.

If the events of the book take place in 1990, then Warlock was born in 1979 and is now 31. What on earth do you suppose he's up to? And with whom?

Warlock runs Torchwood 2, in Glasgow, a job perfectly suited to someone with a background in espionage (via his parents) and supernatural interests (ditto). It's actually pretty low stress -- aliens seldom bother to invade Glasgow because even the universal translator has problems with the accent.

More "malevolence" than confusion, really. :D

I figured he became a corporate raider. Someone that rips apart companies for profit, then turns around and donates half his salary to charity.

So... I'm not sure what happens to him, but apparently that last scene showing Warlock heading back to America was added just for the US publication, because US readers would want to know what happened to the American boy (which, as I can see, they do!) That section doesn't appear in the original UK printing.

It's described (and the extra scene quoted, for any Commonwealth people who'd like to read it) in the Annotated Pratchett File, at http://www.lspace.org/books/apf/good-omens.html (near the bottom of the page).

THANK YOU! I just went all o_0 at this post, and wondered how I'd managed to miss that on my fairly frequent rereadings, and was about to go grab my copy to locate the scene in question when I scrolled down the comments.
