Thanks so much to all of you who sent condolences on the death of the ladycat. It means a lot to have people who understand.

The kidlet tells me that the ladycat came to them in a dream and told them what kind of cat to get for Christmas. No more purebreds, is the ladycat's advice in the kidlet's subconscious. The kidlet asked their friends at school whether it was disrespectful of the ladycat that they wanted to get another cat this soon, and their friends told them to think of it as "carrying on her legacy."

The spouse heard this and said to me in a resigned voice, "I guess we're going to be getting a kitten for the boycat to eat, aren't we?"

edited 2020 to retroactively correct the kidlet's gender pronouns

Depends on the kitten. My cat (in icon) was a farmkitten, and tackled and pinned a bat (that was at least her own weight) at three months old. And by tackled, I mean the bat had started out in the air.

If you're worried about the boycat pushing a kitten around, I suggest a farmkitten.

If the ladycat showed up in a dream with advice, that sounds like an excellent legacy!

I almost always recommend adopting an adult cat. If you can find one that's already friendly to other cats, it should prevent potential issues with being eaten. ;)

Ah, sad about the ladycat. I've lost cats to kidney trouble before too, and it can be quite sudden when it worsens. Thurber said that the only way to get over losing a dog was to get another dog and the same applies to cats. I think if you get another female it'd reduce the spats with the boycat.

Dream cats' advice should always be obeyed - it's the rulz.

Carrying on her legacy is a lovely thought. *hugs*

We lost our cat this summer - very suddenly, no warning. It was extremely painful and the like. Our friends and family were betting on how long it would take until we got another. We lasted a week and came home with 11 week old kittens, boy and girl.

Looking back, I think it was actually a really good thing for us. We both grew up with cats, so to not have a cat around was very odd. And I remember losing cats when I was still at my parents' house, when we lost one the other cats were very lost as well. Perhaps getting a new one would be good for boycat.
