December daily: Small fandoms
Dec. 24th, 2013 10:03 pmI'm constantly seeing a movie or reading a book and wishing there were a fandom. There are a scattered handful of good stories based on Georgette Heyer's Cotillion and The Foundling, and none at all, as far as I know, for Sprig Muslin or The Unknown Ajax, but all of them would lend themselves to further exploration. For instance, the romance in Sprig Muslin has some wonderful emotional intensity in the premise -- the heroine refuses the hero's proposal because she's in love with him -- but it plays out almost entirely in the background, and I'd love to see it fleshed out (and of course played out in literal flesh) the way that fandom can do and canon usually can't.
Naturally I'd like there to be a million Discworld stories. I'd like Pterry to be able to write a million more Discworld novels, too.
The first small fandom on my Christmas list is always and forever "The Breakfast Club," of course.
"The Avengers" is pretty much the precise opposite of a small fandom, but I'd love it if I could direct the people I like to write Tony/Bruce, because they're adorable together.
You know what I most regret the lack of a fandom for, though? "Hancock." And that's not because it's a great movie (though it's a lot better than I expected) but because it has precisely the flaws that fandom is great at fixing. It has a male/male relationship with a lot of intensity that can't quite be crammed into an ordinary friendship. It has a totally underutilized female character with Charlize Theron struggling womanfully to round her out into three dimensions and not quite managing it. It sets the frame down in such a way that there are decades of fertile backstory, most of which Hancock doesn't remember, and the story ends just as a new story would begin.
Also: Will Smith.
