I'm 49, which is an age at which you have to get used to opening the newspaper and seeing that someone your age has endowed a children's-surgery wing at a hospital or died of a heart attack

So it was with some pleasure that I read this morning that someone my age had been arrested for biting her probation officer.

Something to aspire to! Though I admire the people around that age I know who cosplayed in spandex; performed ballet on pointe (having never done before); hiked a glacier; took up acting and improve classes.

When I grow up, I want to be Carolyn Knapp-Shappey. Own my own air dot, fly all over the place, and terrorize my pilots.

I think it takes effort to keep on starting new things! But you have to.

...not that there's anything wrong with founding children's hospitals (and only a few garrottings...)

It's very cheering when someone makes you feel good about your accomplishments in life without also making you contemplate your mortality.

It didn't! It was only a news brief, so a paragraph was all there was -- pretty much name, age, address, and crime.

Every morning, the radio news leads off with whatever was the big crime in that morning's paper. It's a very small town, and most of the crime is pretty small-time (domestic violence, drug use, gas-station robberies) -- a while back, the morning crime involved deer poaching.

It's taking me some getting used to, being in the "heart attack not that weird anymore" age range. But other than that, 52 is not bad.

I've ranted elsewhere about how hard menopause is hitting me, but it's cool to see others in fandom who aren't fresh out of college so I don't feel so out of place.

Yes, indeed, it is indeed the new 49 1/2. If not the new 9 3/4. Or the new 33 1/3.

But I do feel that I'm closer to death now than to birth, and that does have an effect on how I see the world and my life. Not sure what effect exactly, yet, but definitely an effect. Also I got a letter from the NHS inviting me for a mammogram. Means nothing of course as in places like Switzerland all women, regardless of age, are invited for those all the time.
