I'm in salary-negotiation limbo right now, and I won't feel confident until we have a salary agreement and a start date and I've emailed back the magic words "I accept this offer" -- but ...

Their recruitment guy emailed me an offer, and I emailed back excitement + enthusiasm + was hoping the salary would be more like X instead of Y, and he emailed back thanks for timeliness and interest, with a promise to discuss everything with the hiring committee, so ...

All this happened on Thursday, and today I was freaking out in a low-key way all day because I didn't hear back, and then I mentioned to the Tech Goddess that the recruitment guy is in India, and she said, "Duh, it's already the weekend in India," so I felt better.

(On a side note, this is only the second time I've ever negotiated salary, because I didn't know you could! I was just going through my life saying yes to every offer. Curse our money taboos! I'm sharing everything with the kidlet so their mental map of the working world will include "and then my mother proposed a higher salary," which is very important, but possibly not as important as "and it took my mother seven months to find a job, so I'd better not wait till the week before graduation.")

So ... cautious happy dance with little tiny steps and jazz hands kept down below shoulder level? For now?

For what it's worth, I signaled upcoming acceptance at my first job offer, but thought the money was too low. The response was bafflement, but they came back and gave me 5k EUR more. So, good job! Probably will work out.

I argued my last new salary offer almost by mistake (I had had a bad experience with an offer below my then-current job and thought it was happening again) and felt really terrible doing it. But I'm so glad I did!
