I was just listening to the Fisk Jubilee Chorus and it occurred to me that all those gospel and country-gospel songs about trains were probably written when trains were new.

Think how cheesy it would be right now to write a gospel song about how we could all use our iPhones to find Jesus on the internet.

Just goes to show, (a) time converts some cheese to gold, or else (b) the gospel writers of the past were just fundamentally better than we are.

That's very probable. When I was a kid, the local bluegrass bands would do a country gospel number called "Turn Your Radio On," all about the love of God coming down through the airwaves ... wonder if that one is ever performed?

Dunno about whether that particular one still gets performed, but your mentioning the title got me earwormed with Shakespears Sister's Hello (Turn Your Radio On), because apparently that's what my brain is hardwired to associate that phrase with...which is a bit more existential than the country gospel number.

I've actually been wondering about all of the songs this past year where people were talking about cell phones. I thought we were already passing into general usage of just calling them phones. I suspect they'll become weirdly dated.

I don't really listen to popular music, and I'm not sure I'm missing much in terms of music (I'm sure pop today is no better than my beloved ping-ping '80s music was), but I'm definitely missing out on sociological observations like this one.
