The decision that knocked over the first plot domino is the decision to use Anne's password to log into her computer and read an email with some of Drake's confidential legal information. Not saying a real journalist wouldn't do that (though a real lawyer's fiance certainly wouldn't know her password; my work is much less confidential than hers, and I'm required to change mine every sixty days) -- but a real journalist would use the legal document to start an investigation, not just to fling accusations.
