December Daily: memorable meal
Dec. 15th, 2019 06:43 pmSome of you may know that the spouse has a new career as a Presbyterian pastor, and part of his compensation is a big old house with bats in the attic. It has a delightful modern kitchen, but when he moved there, the two of us had one normal kitchen, and when we split it in two, it left both of us somewhat short on housewares.
I love to cook, and I restocked my kitchen as quickly as I could afford to. He is both absent-minded and cheap, and he didn't.
So the first food-related holiday came along (I don't remember whether it was Christmas or Thanksgiving), and we had to be resourceful.
We had apples for pie, but we didn't have any cinnamon, so we brewed a cinnamon tea bag and used the tea in the pie. We rolled out the crust with a wine bottle. We mashed potatoes with the bottom of a drinking glass and made gravy with a fork.
My grandmother, who would have started the meal prep by choosing which chicken to kill, would probably have laughed at the idea of that being a hardship. But I was proud of it.
